- 3. The Problem
- 5. Saying “no” is hard. Especially as a new team, there’s an inclination to want to be helpful, supportive of those around us, to demonstrate our talent and prove our value.
- 6. But is so, so critical. Saying “no” allows us to say “yes” to things that really matter and have long-term value: to our team, to our community, and to the company. Also, gives us the gift of… focus.
- 7. The Solution
- 9. STEP 0 Create a Backlog This is inclusive of ALL ideas we could be doing. Important so people feel heard. Turns a hard “no” into a “not yet.”
- 10. STEP 1 Identify Criteria Figure out what are the most important factors that influence priority. If stuck, an easy one is RICE: Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort
- 11. STEP 2 Choose Multipliers How important is each criteria in relation to each other? (Score: 1-5) Are there criteria that are a net detriment / create ongoing maintenance? (Score: -1-5)
- 12. STEP 3 Score each item It’s important to do this as a team, on a consensus basis. 1. More perspectives = more accurate 2. Holds us all accountable to priorities
- 13. STEP 4 Sort items by score Really impactful stuff naturally floats to the top. Less impactful/less likely to happen things naturally float to the bottom.
