Crossref is an organization that helps publishers join together and register Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for their published content. DOIs provide stable links to content and help with discoverability, tracking usage, and building connections between related research. When publishers join Crossref, they deposit metadata that includes DOIs for their articles, books and other materials. This allows their content to be found more easily and for references to be linked between publications. Crossref recommends that publishers display DOIs prominently and deposit reference lists to take full advantage of the network and services it provides.
