Crowdsourcing Talk

KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 2#KUROGO20

Crowdsourcing Your Content
• Think of both technical and non-technical
ways members of the campus community
can contribute
• Think in terms of ownership
– We want the entire community to feel like it’s their
app, not just an app for where they work/learn
• If they own it, they will use it and provide lots
of feedback
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 3#KUROGO20
16
Technical – Code for Kurogo
• Use a responsive web app approach with
CSS theming
• How will student code be maintained?
• Identify low-risk, high-reward opportunities
• Give them autonomy to create – let them do it
your way, their way
• ND examples: Weather, Webcams, Transit,
O’SNAP
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 4#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – Publisher
• Amazing platform for the non-techie to contribute
and immediately see the results of their labor
– My recipe: show a couple demo sites, 30 minute
walkthrough on building with Publisher, and hand
them the keys
– I require them to watch Eric’s “Publisher Power” talk
from the 2015 Conference
• Departments have ownership in the app and will
be eager to promote it for you
• Great student employee work (create icons,
clean up text, find good pictures, etc.)
• ND examples: Every. Publisher. Module.
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 5#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – QA
• Great student opportunity to improve the app and give them
a concrete skill
• How well does the app work? (aka, Can people use it?)
• Have your users try it and get others to try it
• Find users unfamiliar with the app and present questions
– What’s for lunch today?
– How late is the co-rec open?
– When’s the latest I can apply for early decision?
– Where’s the nearest place to study?
– (Bonus points for questions answered in a different persona)
• Repeat after me: That the app works well for me doesn’t
matter at all. It only matters if it works for the users.
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 6#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – Analytics
• Find a student who loves digging through
numbers and stats, and start asking
questions
– What pages are people spending the most time
on?
– Which pages aren’t as popular as they were?
– Which pages are at the bottom of the list, but the
most clicked?
– On an average day, how does a student use the
app?
– Does the arrangement of icons match the
popularity of the modules?
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 7#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – Make It an Event
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 8#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – VisitND Challenge
• Came out of a request from the EVP’s office
to engage students and improve the guest
experience
“You know what
Notre Dame should
do…you should
have a student tour
contest.”
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 9#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – VisitND Challenge
• Partnered with EVP, SAP (vendor) and Modo
Labs -- $4,500 in prizes lined up
• Built student interest with a ladder of
engagement
1. Get people excited
2. Get their email
3. Get them to submit a 1-page entry
• 64 teams (!) entered in 3 weeks; judging
committee picked the top 10
KUROGO HIGHER ED MOBILE CONFERENCE 2016 10#KUROGO20
16
Non-Technical – VisitND Challenge
• Held mandatory 1-hour meetings (over dinner
with pizza) to hand out credentials and walk
them through Publisher, adding videos,
where to check out cameras, how to use ND
photo collections, etc.
• Teams had 30 days to build their tour
• Judging committee chose the top six, which
went into the ND Mobile app
• Collected public feedback and committee
ranked the top 6

Crowdsourcing Your Content
• Think about how the campus community can
be involved in the app building process
• Find opportunities to solve “information pain
points” on campus with your app
• Liberally borrow other schools’ (and apps’)
ideas
