Editor's Notes

  • #2: Verity Gough: Good Afternoon and welcome to today’s webinar Cut Through the Noise: Using Live, Online Training to Effectively Reach Employees My name is Verity Gough, and I’m Editor, TrainingZone.co.uk at Sift Media and I will be your moderator for today. Before we get started I just wanted to run through some housekeeping so you know how to interact with us today.
  • #3: Verity **WELCOME SLIDE SCRIPT** The GoToWebinar viewer... is made up of 2 parts, the Viewer window where you’ll see today’s presentation, and the Control Panel where you can interact with us during the presentation. You have a choice in how you would like to listen to today’s presentation. (((advance slide))) You may use your computer microphone and speakers (((advance slide))), Or you may choose to dial in using the telephone dial-in instructions provided. (((advance slide))) Throughout the presentation we encourage you to ask questions by (((advance slide))) typing in questions and comments using the Questions panel. We will be answering questions live both during the event and at the end of the presentation. (((advance slide))) We also have a team standing by that will help answer questions during the session. The Control Panel will auto hide allowing you to have the maximum view of the Viewer window. (((advance slide))) You may open and close the Control Panel by clicking on the arrow button on the grab tab. (((advance slide))) Make sure you ask lots of questions throughout the session.
  • #4: Verity I’d now like to introduce you to our speaker today. Roger Courville is the author of The Virtual Presenter’s Handbook, blogger at TheVirtualPresenter.com, and principal of 1080 Group, an independent training firm that helps companies learn and optimize online presentations and webinars. Roger’s a ten-year veteran of live remote training and presentations, and he and his team have careers that include working with hundreds of clients on thousands of webinars involving more than a million participants.
  • #5: Before we get started let me also mention that we will be giving away two copies of Roger’s book, The Virtual Presenter’s Handbook, and we will be drawing those names live from attendees that are in with us toward the end of the hour, so be sure to stay with us.
  • #6: To kick things off as I hand the virtual microphone over to Roger, let’s begin with a poll: What is your experience with training using Webinars? This is the first Webinar I’ve attended I’ve attended several I’ve presented once or twice I’ve presented numerous times I’m a pro (use Q&A: how many a month?)
  • #7: - not going to argue that we never again need face to face meetings - despite agreement that in-person remains the most influential way to (train, market, sell), too often the costs outweigh the benefits - webinars bridge that gap - < benefits>, but the new opportunity for using this medium of communication brings with it an important new question: How do presenters deliver engaging, interactive presentations to audiences they can’ see?
  • #8: Let’s face it: The world of training and communications is changing. Rapidly and forever. <CLICK>  And for HR and training professionals in particular, there is ever-increasing pressure to demonstrate productivity.
  • #9: So not surprisingly, professionals who need to reach employees will be turning to the web for self-directed elearning, social networking, synchronous remote communications and training using webinars.
  • #10: And when we look at why this might be, as we did in a recent 1080 Group survey on the use of Web conferencing for Training in Europe, besides saving money (which is everyone’s concern in today’s economy), the next most powerful reason was to reach people. Whether your need is to reach more people…or variations of that like ‘reach the same people more frequently,’ the opportunity – and the pressing need – is to find alternatives or supplements to how employees have reached to date.
  • #11: Today we’re going to jumpstart your use of webinars in the context of four areas key to success.
  • #12: Before we get started though, please help me understand where to place emphasis in today’s webinar. What is YOUR biggest challenges? What are your biggest challenges? [select all that apply] - Need to reduce travel or time spent managing employees at multiple locations - Getting new hires appropriately trained and equipped - Time spent on compliance training - Communicating time sensitive information more quickly - Delivering content to people who missed training sessions
  • #23: The first step is to think “simple” and “visual.” This example, too common to most of us, is neither. (VISUAL DOESN’T have to be an image or graph) Remember, it’s likely that part of your audience is multi-tasking – and while they’re doing that in the offline world, too, with their Blackberries and iPhones, we can not only make things more visually appealing for all, but more quickly comprehend-able for those who might only be giving you part of their attention.
  • #24: One good step in the right direction was the intent of the whoever created the “5X5” rule (or you may have heard it as 6X6 or 7X7). The problem is still several-fold: too much risk of someone zoning out, too much temptation to read the slide, too many words for today’s glance-and-go audience.
  • #25: … and show the process, in this case a linear process, in a visual form Visual Choose color wheel
  • #26: Talkpoints In online presentations, the focal point of the audience shifts from you at the front of the room to their computer desktops. Improving the visual impact of your presentation is important to engaging people, but focusing only on great slides misses an opportunity to turn viewers into active participants. (CUTlet’s be real people are multitasking during in-person presentations…your challenge there is the same…tell a good story, use good visuals, don’t be boring…but beyond good visuals, this is live – totally synchronous (and even TV can’t claim that lest we have a wardrobe malfunction), and you mustcreate an opportunity for your audience to participate, or there’s a good chance you lose them to email)
  • #27: Research has shown that an audience engaged with audio-visual content is four times as likely to retain the information from a “lecture,” while those engaged with some type of activity are even higher. Tell (LOGIC) + show (EMOTION) + engage (ACTIVITY)
  • #32: … and show the process, in this case a linear process, in a visual form Visual Choose color wheel
  • #33: … and show the process, in this case a linear process, in a visual form Visual Choose color wheel
  • #34: … and show the process, in this case a linear process, in a visual form Visual Choose color wheel
  • #48: Winner drawn from the audience at the end of the hour Must be present to win Other Book giveaways
  • #50: Philip At 3.55 we have time for one more question. At 4pm – Thank everyone for attending and let me know that the webinar is now ending.
