Digital Entertainment Systems
          Semester A
Aims
• The aims of this module are to enable students to . . .
• • understand the range of digital media used in
  digital entertainment currently available;
• • design, develop and evaluate advanced digital
  media systems;
• • be aware of current research and developments
  and future trends in digital media used in digital
  entertainment systems;
• • have experience of a range of media on variety of
  digital entertainment platforms;
• • develop a range of practical skills and competences
  relevant to the design of digital media systems.
Learning Outcomes
Successful students will typically have knowledge and
understanding of:
• issues in the development, design, implementation and
  evaluation of high quality digital media;
• the wider context of digital media, for example culture,
  research and future trends in digital media, for
  example audio and video formats;
• usability and Human Computer Interaction as it applies
  to the development of interactive multimedia systems;
• the range of skills required in order to produce digital
  media.
Practical Outcomes
Successful students will typically . . .
• demonstrate professional competence in
  areas such as image, animation, video and
  audio production and editing;
• develop scripting and programming skills in
  order to create interactive digital media
  systems.
Schedule
• Friday 1-2 E350 Lecture
• Practicals:
  – Group 1 12-1 Thursday
  – Group 2 9-10 Friday

•   Ch. 2. Working with Graphics
•   Ch. 3. Creating and Editing Symbols
•   Ch. 4. Adding Animation
•   Ch. 5. Articulated Motion and Morphing
•   Ch. 7. Using Text
•   Ch. 8. Working with Sound and Video
Assessment

• To use the full range of skills and experiences
  obtained on the module to create a DVD
  suitable for playing on a standard DVD player,
  connected to a Standard Definition PAL-based
  television set.
The DVD
• 1. A two minute video about a personal hobby or interest.
• 2. A 20-second animated advertisement created in Flash. The advert
  should promote your hobby or interest.
• 3. A sequence of images (minimum 5, maximum 10) created in Photoshop,
  and designed to demonstrate
• some of the Photoshop techniques covered in the Photoshop lecture /
  workshop
• 4. A submenu of your own design. This choice should take you to a
  separate submenu screen offering 4
• choices:
    – 1. The storyboard of your video. This must be neat, clear and readable.
    – 2. Scrolling credits for every item that needs to be credited (eg sound and
      image sources etc).
    – 3. Scrolling bibliography for this piece of work.
    – 4. Return to main menu.
