Today’s Structure
• Advance your group project (5:15-6:30)
• Present your group topic, personas, customer journeys
• Provide feedback to each other on additional questions,
perspectives, data points
• Learn about the open educational practices (7:00-
8:00)
• Consider how OER can increase sustainability in your
group project
• Explore MOOCs, OER Tools, Badges
• Engage with today’s guest speaker (8:15-end)
Open Educational Resources (OER)
• Term coined in 2002
during a forum held by the
UNESCO.
• Open materials in the
public domain with an
open license
• anyone can legally and
freely copy, use, adapt
and re-share
Open Educational Resources
You can learn anything.
For free. For everyone. Forever. (Khan Academy)
Free online education, open to

A World of Learning at Your Fingertips
Leveraging OER
productively:
Not easy
Not obvious
Not effortless
You need:
o Personal ‘Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle’ Approach
o Seamless Learning
Strategies for Students
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Reduce the time you spend on repetitive topics and tasks
oSelect your OER quest strategically (What are you telling over and
over? Which topics are very basic?)
oDevote more time on assignments and feedback, less on lecture
content
Reuse material purposefully to activate students
oUse OER in assignments
oUse Augmented Reality and QR codes to bridge your material and
other sources
oAsks students to repurpose OER: rewrite, redesign, transfer to
different medium
Recycle outstanding student material and ideas to
demonstrate excellence
Ideas for Engaging Students in OER:
Mindmap
Draw a
mindmap of

environment.

open learning
materials fit
in?

Ideas for Engaging Teachers in OER:
What’s on Your Plate Right Now?
Take 5 minutes to reflect:
o What are you currently
teaching that is particularly
challenging?
o Are there specific
instructional problems you
want to address?
o Are there materials you
would like to provide, but do
not have the time to create?
(How) can OER help?
OER Case Study 1: Empirical Methods
Course, TH Cologne, 2019
Computational science
bachelor students
3-day in person class on
empirical methods
(introduction to scientific
method, qualitative and
quantitative methods,
evaluation design)
Use of MOOCs to teach
concepts
Learning through
teaching
Empirical Methods Course, TH Cologne,
2019
Students worked in groups
through the following steps:
1. Watch relevant OER
videos from two
Coursera MOOCs
2. Summarize content and
design learning game to
convey the content
3. Present / play game with
peers
4. Design evaluation to test
effectiveness of learning
Takeaway Lessons
o MOOCs /lecture videos can be used in
flipped classroom settings
o Using OER materal allowed for less
lecturing, more generative learning
practices
o Incredibly positive student feedback
o MOOC content / OER material still
predominantly English - language
barriers can hinder student learning
OER Case Study 2: Local Government in
North Carolina
Updated periodically (every 5-
10 years) since 1993
Textbook audiences are 9-12
school classes, informal
learners, citizen academies.
The philosophy of contributing
to a common good that
underlies the open educational
resources movement is a fitting
match for contributing to civic
literacy and digital citizenship.

Local Government in North Carolina: E-
Book
Local Government in North Carolina is produced with
PressBooks, a WordPress based platform that allows us to
publish e-books in multiple formats (epub, mobi, html, pdf) from
one single source document.

Local Government in North Carolina:
Augmented Reality Metaverse is an app and
studio that allows users to
create experiences, polls,
and media walls.
Each ‘experience’ has a
unique QR code. Through
the metaverse mobile app,
users can scan the QR
codes to activate the
augmented reality
experience.
Users can clone experiences

Local Government in North Carolina:
Podcast Audio episodes with a
specific RSS feed that
allows listeners to capture
the content on mobile
devices.
The LGNC podcast
extends the book with
interviews and stories
about everyday activities in
local government.
Platform: WordPress

Takeaway Lessons
o Open is more than just free
o Consider your authoring tools and routines
o Building for reuse means building for sustainability (i.e. easy
to update by various and varying stakeholders)
OER Example 3: LELA Badges
Badges are a mechanism
to award ‘micro-credits’
online. They are awarded
by an organization for an
individual user, and can be
either internal to a website
or online community, or
use open standards and
shared repositories.
Badgr as an open source
platform offers unlimited
digital badges for free.

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Purposefully reduce the time you spend on writing your Powerpoints and lecture notes, and instead increase the time you think about assignments, group work, classroom activities. Don’t discard or disregard everything that’s not a 100% match, Even though it may not be a great fit at first glance, it has the potential to improve your instruction.
  • #4: The term open educational resources (OER) was coined in 2002 during a forum held by the UNESCO. UNESCO defines Open Educational Resources as open materials that are in the public domain or introduced with an open license, which means that anyone can legally and freely copy, use, adapt and re-share them. OERs range from textbooks to curricula, syllabi, lecture notes, assignments, tests, projects, audio, video and animation.
  • #5: There are many well known, established platforms, repositories and providers for open learning content. They all make rather bold statements about the power of openness. Here are a few examples.   So what’s not to love? Well just because material is available, and it is clicked on, and maybe even downloaded, this does not necessarily equate to actual learning.
  • #6: OER offer a world of learning at your fingertips. However, it is not easy, effortless or obvious how to productively leverage OER for teachers and learners. Instructors need to develop an individual approach - and I will offer my personal ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ strategy. At the same time, it’s an important byproduct of open learning to empower students to become independent, lifelong learners who can effectively self-regulate and use learning strategies. Even though this is an online talk, I have included several workshop-activities that allow me to engage in conversations with my co-hosts and will hopefully encourage you to develop an actionable plan for leveraging Open Educational Resources.
  • #7: Purposefully reduce the time you spend on writing your Powerpoints and lecture notes, and instead increase the time you think about assignments, group work, classroom activities. Don’t discard or disregard everything that’s not a 100% match, Even though it may not be a great fit at first glance, it has the potential to improve your instruction.
  • #9: One thing I find particularly helpful is to reflect ‘What’s on your plate right now?’ What classes are you teaching right now? Is there anything that is particularly challenging? Are there specific instructional challenges, for examples any topics that your students your students just don’t seem to get, prerequisites that not everybody comes prepared with, or aspects that you find particularly laborious and tedious to prepare.
