A game that involves counters or pieces moved or placed on
a pre-marked surface or a board, according to a set of rules.
Games can be based on pure strategy, chance (like rolling
dice), or a mixture of the two, and usually have a goal that a
player aims to achieve.

  • #2: Cardboard Perspective? This is more like a sharing session rather than a lecture. We’re gonna earn scores & have fun during this session.

  • #5: Boardgames have evolved, they’re not just a mere toy but a communication tool. Catan is designed by Klaus Teuber, published in 1995 and considered as a pioneer of modern board game.
  • #6: - Let’s try this experiment. How many people can guess my card?
  • #7: Congratulations! You just played a round of Dixit. Beside the clever gameplay, Dixit box is also used as a scoring track for the game. Thematic boardgames for all age & taste, including zombies, fantasy & warfare.
  • #8: User experience design (UXD or UED) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction between the user and the product. - Donald Norman, UX Architect, co-founder of Nielsen Norman Group & user-centered design supporters.
  • #9: Why board game need a good UXD? Since you have to move every bits & pieces yourself, a good streamlined design will helps you set-up the game faster & recognize the pattern easier. Lords of Waterdeep combines score track, worker placement iconography & there’s a place for every deck in the board (point out building lots).
  • #10: Every inch is precious, make effective & efficient use of space. Carcassonne is a strategic tile-laying games that allows you to create a dynamic shaped town from various tiles. Dixit box can be used as a score-tracker.
  • #11: Player need to track various variables inside the game, let alone making multiple strategic decisions. Don’t let the board get in the way.
  • #12: Do you have any idea what they are doing?
  • #13: What about this? Don’t get me wrong, this game is great & complex, but it could use a little tidying up.
  • #14: You’ll encounter different experience when you play with different people.
  • #15: You play differently with different people. Chess. Who knows what Free Parking space do in Monopoly? Include Monopoly Official Rulebook.
  • #16: - It’s just one of many, and can be directly felt by the player.
  • #18: It’s encompass all things but Visual Design & Usability usually are connected with game components while Information Architecture are connected with Rulebook, while the interaction is closely tied with Mechanics. Let’s take a look at these study cases.
  • #19: Great game that lets you conquer Europe using multiple European Nations. You can track your result using this tracker. Don’t need a lot of theories and let’s jump right into the next slide.
  • #20: Philippe Keyaerts re-implements Vinci mechanism into Small World, gaining an instant success. The race power is split into two parts instead of one power to increase replayability. The scoring tracker is converted into Victory Coins which makes it harder for player to track who is currently leading the game.
  • #21: Information architecture can include a lot of things, including the rulebook. In case you can’t read the title in the rulebook, it’s called Dominion. It’s a great game where each player build their own deck along the way, it even created a new trend. And it’s only fair to compare it with another board game published in the same year.
  • #22: Also a great game where you plays as a group of scientist trying to save the world from a Pandemic. Popularize a genre where players can play together to defeat the game/system.
