- 2. PaLibraries LibGuides Project Every trainer and participant who attends a workshop will have ADMIN status. Access to LibGuides is free to trained participants until September 1, 2012. All LibGuides can be backed up so that the content can be saved. All URLs will begin with http://palibraries.libguides.com/ . Within LibGuides, you have the ability to share each other ’s LibGuides content with permission of the author.
- 3. Creating Accounts/My Profile STEP 1: Login to http://palibraries.libguides.com/admin.php use the password “palibraries.” Go to “Edit My Account” and change your password to something you will remember. Don’t forget it. STEP 2: Click on “Customize Profile Box” Fill in info and upload a photo from your computer if you have one. Say Cheese! For more info on account and editor types, click here .
- 6. Creating a New LibGuide Click on GUIDES then select CREATE NEW GUIDE . Add guide title and description, then CREATE. This initial page is called HOME as indicated by the tab. Each new page you create within this guide will have a tab title that you give it. - 9. Box Types Within the LibGuide you just created, you will be creating boxes of content. Click on ADD NEW BOX and look at the type of boxes available. Use the BOX TYPES EXPLORER to view the types. For example, content boxes are available for text, web links with descriptions, audio or video content, widgets, simple polls, RSS feeds, etc. Notice that you can reuse an existing box that you may have created on another page, like a search of your online catalog. - 10. From ADD NEW BOX , click on BOX TYPES EXPLORER Notice that by selecting any box type, you will get a description of that type of box. By clicking More info... at the bottom of the explanation, you get step-by-step instructions from the Help Guide.

- 18. Box 2 Complete: Links & Lists Icon of tools allows you to edit the link and its description, or delete it. Icon of a bar graph shows Quick Statistics for the current month and total since creation . Unless you disable comments, users can add comments about these links.

Back in LibGuides, click on ADD NEW BOOK and fill out the dialog box with info from the book located in your online catalog. Click on the blue “S” to retrieve free cover art (ISBN required). - 31. Create an Advanced News Search Go to http://news.google.com/ and set up your search. Click on the dropdown in the search box to open Advanced Search. Run the search to be sure it gets the results you are looking for.
- 32. Copy the long URL at the top of the Google News Search results page. Go to ADD RSS FEED in the box on your LibGuide page, paste in the URL at FEED URL and limit the results to 3 to 5 items.

Select your catalog vendor tab from Library Catalog Searches . Read the directions. ADD NEW BOX - RICH TEXT/DYNAMIC CONTENT/SCRIPTS The PROCESS – You will be copying some html code, Editing the code to add your catalog location info., and Pasting it into the LibGuides RICH TEXT edit box. Really, you can do this!
- 34. Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online Catalog STEP 2- Editing the Code Open a new browser and go to your online catalog to locate your domain and site or profile number. Domain is after http:// For example: Destiny.easdpa.org Site number appears at the bottom of the screen when you mouse-over the name of your school from the Destiny list of district schools (Directions may differ if you have other systems. Read your directions.) For example, in Destiny the site number is likely a 3 digit number.
- 35. Box 6 – Creating a Link to Your Online Catalog STEP 2- Pasting in the Code Copy the html code provided in the Library Catalog Searches file for your system. Back in LibGuides, click on ADD TEXT in the box you just created. Click the PLAIN TEXT EDITOR tab. Paste in the code. Replace the domain name and site or profile number wherever it appears (For Destiny- replace one site number and 6 domain names.) Save and refresh the page. Destiny should look like this:

Creating Search Boxes to your Online Databases Go to Creating Search Boxes to create custom search boxes with their graphics for databases to which your library subscribes such as Gale, EBSCO, etc. You can also make a direct link to a POWER Library database, but it will only work within your library. From home, library users must be directed to the public library ’s page where they type in their patron barcode number to use POWER Library databases.

- 38. Box 7 – Creating a Poll or Survey The “User Feedback” has predefined Q & A’s about the usefulness of the info. on the LibGuide. Results are emailed to the LibGuide owner. The “Interactive Poll” is best for a simple poll on a topic and allows you to create your own Q and A’s and view the results in Admin mode. Our license does not include the “Survey” choice . - #4: Note to Trainers: Beginning with this slide, you may wish to tell participants to watch the PowerPt slides first, then following the slide instructions. Each series of slides begins with the directions, then shows slides of the screen shots in LibGuides to the final screen shot when the step is completed. Everyone is assigned “admin” status who is trained. When trainers replicate this workshop, they will need to add each participant and assign the password “palibraries” prior to the workshop so that participants can log in. If this is not done prior to the workshop or there is a “walk-in,” trainers can add them before starting or during a break. If librarians want students or patrons to help create content on a guide, they should first go into the LibGuide they want to give access to, click on “Guide Setting” from the command bar and choose “Co-Owners, Editors, and Collaborators.” Most likely you will assign them “collaborator” access which allows them to add/edit anything on a guide but they cannot publish. Remind everyone that a “digital presence” is important so that students, teachers, administrators, and the community recognize your expertise and begin to understand what a librarian does in the 21 st century. Although we are not demonstrating it today, you can create a Libguide and give password access to a group of selected students or teachers who are working on a project to create a LibGuide. The guide is “private” until you “publish” it. COLUMNS: The default format for a LibGuides page consists of a narrow column on the left, a wide column in the center, and a narrow column with the librarian's profile box on the right. The format can be changed to eliminate the left column. (The center column will then be extended all the way to the left.) To make this change: Click on Add/Edit Pages on the yellow command bar. Select Adjust Columns on This Page Change the column widths at the bottom from Left - 230; Center - 520; Right - 209 (the default) to Left - 0; Center - 758; Right - 209. - #14: Click on any of the “Add New Box” phrases in your newly created LibGuides. There will be one for each of the three default columns. TITLES ADVICE: The title bar at the top of a box will not expand, so it is important not to make your box titles too long. This is rarely a problem in the wider center column, but must be watched for in the narrower left or right-hand columns. If it looks like your title is not fitting, click on the Preview link at the top right of the page. Sometimes, the pencil icon in edit mode keeps the title from fitting, but it may be okay when actually published. The preview will show you how it will ultimately appear. Recommended values are 0, 758, 209 (for hiding the left column), or 209, 758, 0 (for hiding the right column). For a 1 column layout, please enter 0 for the left column and the right column and 975 for the center column. This will make the center column the only visible column, 975 pixels wide. - #30: RSS (really simple synchronization) is a standard for receiving syndicated articles on the Internet. It is a tool to keep someone up-to-date on the latest info. A site that is syndicated, like the New York Times , will usually advertise its RSS feed using the orange icon pictured on this slide. Examples of good RSS feeds -newspapers, newsletters, news headlines, blogs (like the ones listed at School Library Journal or AASL Blog), etc. Some sites like Yahoo, Google or Netvibes, are RSS feed aggregators and allow you to set up a customized search news articles on a specific topic. For more info on how to set these up, go to “ How to Use Google News to Build Custom RSS feeds” [http://webtrends.about.com/od/webfeedsyndicationrss/ss/use-google-news.htm ] . While you can use other RSS feed aggregators other than Google, LibGuides is completely friendly with Google tools and therefore is recommended. To create a Google custom RSS feed, you create an advanced search on a topic of interest—you can even limit it to videos. - #32: You can use an existing blog or news feed or create your own custom news search like this one. In Google News, using the Advanced News Search feature, we set up a custom search for news articles from Pennsylvania sources only that include the search terms “school libraries” and one of the following words “cuts,” “elimination,” or “eliminated.” We also want the results sorted with the newest first. - #42: These are the screen shots showing how to add a new page to your LibGuide. It will appear as another tab at the top of your LibGuide. Remember to keep the page titles relatively short. - #45: To quickly find the pages you have created, you can create “tags” or words that can be searched. For example, “williamsporths” added as a tag to all the pages created for the Williamsport High School, will allow you to easily search just those pages. (Remember this is a statewide project so it is likely that hundreds of pages will be created in the PaLibraries project. Tagging your guide with a few keywords will help users find it in the system. Type your tags separating each with a comma, or click any existing tag to assign it to this guide. NOTE: “Subjects” can only be assigned by the workshop authors in order to ensure authority control. - #48: A nice feature of LibGuides is the collaborative, sharing feature. When you create a LibGuide you can choose to share it with others in your “community.” Whatever is included in the “Best of LibGuides” section already grants permission for reuse. For all other Libguides, you need to request permission first. You can practice this during the “play and create” time. NOTE: You can also copy something you have created on a LibGuide, such as a custom search box, and paste it into another LibGuide page you are creating. - #54: Embedit.in (http://embedit.in) allows you to easily create embed code for video, websites, slideshows, documents, etc. You can customize the code, annotate, highlight, and easily embed in a LibGuide box without the need for a third-party site like SlideShare or YouTube.

- #56: Sqworl (http://sqworl.com/) is a free web application that provides a clean and simple way to visually bookmark multiple URLs, displaying thumbnails and annotations. Great for beginners.
- #57: Only2Clicks (http://only2clicks.com) allows you to easily create thumbnails pathfinders or web tours with annotations. You can gather together a number of pathfinders in categories under a system of tabs. Great for beginners.
- #58: LiveBinders (http://livebinders.com/) is an alternative to LibGuides and allows you to create free, embeddable online-binders to organize uploaded documents, websites, and your own commentary.
- #59: Netvibes (http://netvibes.com) allows you to create and publish a “personal dashboard” to monitor blog, Twitter feeds, create lists of links using tabs and a system of boxes for feeds and embed code.
