Supercluster 101
Federal Supercluster Program
5
Federal government
investing $950MM into
superclusters to drive
growth, prosperity, jobs
and global leadership.
A collaboration of large and small
companies, technology adopters
and providers, universities,
colleges, Indigenous peoples and
not-for-profit organizations to turn
ideas into solutions that can be
brought to market.
Superclusters encourage and
leverage investment in new
areas and strengthen supply
chains through partnerships
with private sector, post-
secondary, innovation
intermediaries and government.
~$1 Billion Industry-driven Ambitious Projects
Supercluster Objectives
6
Develop globally-
competitive
platforms and
companies
Build powerful
partnerships
and alliances
Increase breadth
and diversity
of talent ready for a
digital economy
Scale up small and
medium-sized
enterprises
and increase
ecosystem
performance

Collaborative
Position Canada as a global leader in digital technology by unlocking
the potential of data in the era of the intelligent enterprise
Purpose
Digital. Transformation.
Through business led collaborative partnerships,
we facilitate and fund the development of
digital products and platforms to transform industries
and propel economic growth across Canada.
9
How do Supercluster Programs Work?
10
Supercluster provides
platform for collaboration
among Member and
Associate organizations
Project consortia develop
and submit collaborative
proposals to Supercluster
Projects are selected
based on a competitive
project evaluation process
Approved projects receive
co-investment funding
from the Supercluster

Competitive
Project Selection
Co-investment
in Projects
What is the Nature of the Funding
What it is…
• Competitive process for project funding
• Multiple calls for proposals over 5 years
• Minimum requirements to be eligible
proposal incl. consortium composition
• Matching funding towards eligible
consortium projects
• Multi-year commitments to consortium
based on duration of selected projects
11
What it isn’t…
• Not a substitute for IRAP, SDTC, SIF, WINN or
other forms of direct funding to companies
• Not a substitute for research council funding
• Not designed to support a single company; it
is project-focused funding with multiple
collaborators
• Not equity or debt financing;
it is project funding
Supercluster Programs and Projects
Digital Technology Supercluster Focus
13
Technology Leadership Capacity-Building
Collaborative projects that directly
enhance the productivity, performance
and competitiveness of member firms.
Projects that enhance regional labour
force skills including diversity and First
Nations initiatives. Builds the innovation
ecosystem and increases access to world
markets.
2 Focus Areas
Technology Leadership Projects
Collaborative technology development projects that could radically improve Canadian
economic prosperity, competitiveness and productivity that are focussed on:
Unlocking the potential of data to create new scalable products/ platforms that have the
potential to transform industries
Precision Health: Projects that leverage digital technologies to transform any aspect of
healthcare delivery and life sciences
Digital Twins: Projects that involve the digital representation of real world objects or
systems and the dynamics of how they function over their life cycle
Data Commons: Projects that involve the aggregation of diverse sources of data to create
collaborative platforms on which to build new products
14
Capacity Building Projects
Initiatives that enhance the competitiveness and connectivity of the region to
achieve objectives including:
Grow a digital workforce prepared for the jobs of tomorrow
Ensure a diverse pool of digital talent (opportunities for Indigenous people,
underrepresented groups, women)
Scale SMEs with resources for growth, increased exports and competitiveness
Increase supply chain links to enhance access to global markets
15Pilot program starting in Spring 2019

Precision Health
To create a targeted, predictive and
personalized approach to health
care, prevention, detection and
treatment strategies.
A data-driven approach to:
•Predict and prevent disease
•Diagnose more precisely
•Personalize targeted interventions
•Engage, inform and empower
patients, caregivers and healthcare
professionals
Digital Twins Data Commons
To create real-time, virtual
production environments for
operations management,
simulation, modelling and training.
Facilitate rapid data-driven
decision-making in complex
industrial systems:
• Digital twins of manufacturing,
health and resource operating
environments
• Digital Learning Factories
• Virtualization of natural resource,
health and infrastructure projects
To aggregate big data resources
from multiple stakeholders and
platforms for exploration, machine
learning and application
development.
Facilitate a collaborative data
commons to:
• Create hybrid connectivity
between systems and data silos
• Analyze more data and harness
new computational resources
• Enable the use and secure sharing
of data from any device, anywhere.
