Introduction to Computer Networks
 Also known as data network, is a collection of interconnected nodes
capable of exchanging data.
 Node – Each station in a communication network is called a node.
Components of Computer Network
 Two or more computers.
 Cables(coaxial, twisted pair or fiber optic) to link computers.
 Network Interface Card(NIC)
 Switches
 A software called network operating system.
Advantages of Networks
 Increased Speed
 Reduced Cost
 Improved Security
 Centralized Software Management
 Flexible access
Disadvantages of Networks
 High Cost of Installation
 Requires time for administration
 Failure of Server
Network Types
 A computer network can be classified into four types
 It is a collection of computers that are linked together in a local area, such
as building or office.
 A LAN connects computers by coaxial cable, twisted pair etc.
 It is less expensive.
 LAN offers more security.
1) LAN(Local Area Network)
 A PAN is a network that is set up for a single person for personal usage.
 Laptops, mobile phones are used to establish a personal area network.
 There are two types of WAN:
 Wired personal area network
 Wireless personal area network
Examples are Small Home Office where devices are connected through
internet via VPN.
2) PAN(Personal Area Network)
 It is a network that connects many LANs to build a bigger network.
 Government agencies utilise MAN to communicate with residents and
private business.
 MAN is used in communication between the banks in a city.
 It can be used in Airline Reservation.
 It can be used for communication in military.
3) MAN(Metropolitan Area Network)
 A WAN is a network that is expanded to a broad geographical area, such
as states or countries.
 It is connected through telephones lines, and satellite connectivity.
 It is utilised in business, government, and education.
 Examples of WAN are Mobile Broadband(4G Network), Private network etc.
4) WAN(Wide Area Network)
Internet
 The internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world.
 Through Internet, people can share information and communicate from
anywhere with an internet connection.
 It was first created in 1969 by ARPANET.
Uses of Internet
 E-mail- It is an electronic message that is delivered from one computer to
another through a network.
 World Wide Web- It is a popular information sharing service on internet.
 E-commerce- It includes variety of online goods and services having
commercial operations.
Sensor Networks
 It is a group of sensors where each sensor monitors data in different location
and sends it to the central location for storage, viewing and analysis.
Applications of Sensor Networks
 1) Home Security- The primary goal of home security is to detect an
intruder.
 Examples are glass-break sensor, security cameras, motion detectors.
2) Environmental Monitoring- Researchers, farmers need to moniter aspects of
natural environment such as air pollution, soil quality and weather metrices.
So instead of manual approach, we use automated sensor network.
 3) Municipal Surveillance- It is mostly used by Police Officers to check on
crimes happening in the city through surveillance cameras.
 4) Earthquake Detection- It is the most scientific way to detect earthquake
through sensor networks.
Vehicular Networks
 1) It is a wireless network used in vehicles that safety road applications to
drivers.
 2) It minimises accidents and collision.
 3) Advantages of Vehicular Networks are-
- Increase comfort
- Reduce traffic jams
- Decrease travel times
- Relieve driver efforts
Thankyou!
