Professional writing is a style of
written communication used in a
workplace environment that allows
professionals (e.g. businesspeople,

Academic Writing
Some writers of Academic Writing met common
errors and sentence construction errors. These include
errors with verb tenses, punctuation around essential
and nonessential clauses. Commas after introductory
words and phrases, possessive forms of nouns, and
subject verb agreement with complex subjects.

Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Essentially, it’s a set of rules that allows
you to express your ideas clearly and following
grammar rules can help you establish credibility
as you write, maybe as you publish. It’s
important in all forms of writing especially in
academic and professional writing. And finally,
it’s learnable.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
For anybody who is accustomed to
language and communication that is not so
academic, it may take some time to get used
to the academic use of English, but it is
certainly learnable.

often difficult to 100% eradicate
something all writers experience

Error #1
Error related to verb tenses.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Correct: She wrote last night.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
1. English has more than a dozen verb tenses
2. Tenses show the time of the action or state, or
general truths.
She writes every day.
She is writing right now.
She wrote last night.
She will write later.
Example: She writes last night.

Error #2
Tense Consistency
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Example:
The journalist conducted the interviews and then
transcribe them.
Both of these actions denote that they are done in
the past and both of these actions belong to the
journalist. So, it makes sense for them to be
consistent both in the simple past tense.
Example:
The journalist conducted the interviews and then
transcribed them.

The verbs in this sentence accurately show the
time relationship between the two classroom
experiences.
Example:

Error #3
Subject-Verb Agreement
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
The subject and verb need to agree with each
other. This means that you need to pay close
attention to the subject of the sentence and notice
if it is singular or plural. Singular subjects need to
go with singular verbs and plural subjects need to
go with plural verbs.

Run-on sentences and comma splices
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
These are two common errors that go hand in hand.
When two or more independent clauses are connected by a
coordinating conjunction (for/and/nor/but/or/yet/so) but if
the connecting punctuation is missed, it becomes a run-on
sentence. A comma must be put before the coordinating
conjunction. When you use a comma to join two independent
clauses without a coordinating conjunction, it is called a
comma splice.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Example:
IC: I love painting and I am getting enough time for
it as well but the exhibition deadline is stressing me
out.
The above sentence has three separate clauses:
•I love painting
•I get enough time for it as well
• the exhibition deadline is stressing me out

as well but the exhibition deadline is stressing me
out. – RUN-ON SENTENCE

Comma MISUSE
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Commas are the most diverse punctuation marks
with multiple uses. And the more number of ways
they can be used, the more number of mistakes
can be made. One misplaced comma can change
the meaning of the entire sentence.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Example:
Let's eat grandpa.
Let's eat, grandpa.
Correct Answer: Let's eat, grandpa.
Reminder: The right comma can even save lives!

Error #6
Apostrophe MISUSE
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
1. To show a noun in a possessive case
Example: Ravi's book. (a book belonging to Ravi)
The apostrophe has two main uses:
2. To make letters and acronyms plural. Apart from
this, apostrophes are strictly never used to make
something plural
Examples:
Dot your i's and cross your t's.
I brought home all the faulty CD's to make some art
piece out of them.

Error #7
Ambiguous Modifiers
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Ambiguous modifiers or squinting modifiers are words,
phrases or clauses which describe the word before it or
after it. It is a misplaced modifier. Students often place
modifiers next to the wrong word. The meaning of the
sentence becomes confusing and ambiguous if the
wrong word is modified or described.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing

Example:
The waiter presented a steak to the guest that was
medium rare.
The waiter presented a medium-rare steak to the guest.

Error #8
Redundant Words
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
This is not particularly a grammatical error but it does
make your writing look less polished and amateurish.
To appear smart or to fill up their answer sheets,
students often use more words than necessary to say
the same thing. Answers should be crisp and to-the-
point. Doing away with redundant words and using
single words in place of longer phrases gives your
answer a clean, academic look.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Error #9
The use of contractions
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Contractions are shortened versions of words that use
apostrophes in place of letters, such as "can't," "isn't,"
"she's," and "wouldn't." The more formal, non-contracted
versions are "cannot," "is not," "she is," and "would not."
You might be surprised by how much better a sentence
can sound if non-contracted versions of the words
replace the contractions.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing

Example
The character isn't aware that he's surrounded by people
he can't trust.
The character is not aware that he is surrounded by
people he cannot trust.
Make your writing more formal by avoiding contractions. Just find the
contractions and replace them with the non-contracted versions of the words.

Error #10
The use of
colloquialism and slang expressions.
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Colloquial diction is informal language used in everyday
speech and includes such words as "guys," "yeah,"
"stuff," "kind of," "okay," and "big deal." Highly informal
diction, such as "freak out" and "dissing," falls into the
category of "slang."
Both colloquialism and slang expressions convey an
informal tone and should be avoided in formal writing.

It's only necessary to capitalize other pronouns when they begin
a sentence. However, the pronoun "I" is always capitalized, no
matter where it falls in a sentence.

He said that we can go home, but I’d wait to hear from the

Spelling Mistakes
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
Editing Common Grammar Errors in Formal Writing
With education becoming increasingly digitized, we
spend a lot of our time on the computer or our
smartphones where our text is automatically spell
checked. So, we tend to put little effort into
remembering correct spellings and tend to lose a
lot of marks in exams for the same.
