ELEMENTS OF
DESIGN
LINE SHAPE & FORM
Effect of line on different figure types
Text book page 60
• Lines break up large areas into smaller areas.
• It creates movement by carrying the eyes from
one area to another.
• Vertical lines gives an illusion of height, dignity
and strength
• Horizontal lines gives a feeling of relaxation.
• Diagonal lines are slanted and suggest activity and
excitement.
• Curves lines create the appearance of softness and
fullness
Effect of shape and form on different figure types
Text book page 62
• The outline/shape of the body is called silhouette.
• Form is the three dimensional (3D) shape of and object. If it has
height, weight and depth it has form.
• Form makes up the enclosed areas of a design. THE CLOTHES
YOU WEAR plus YOUR BODY FIGURE makes up FORM.
• Example of shape and form in clothes: shoulder pads,
• full skirt with wide legs produce a full form. These make a
person look larger and heavier.
• A straight dress without a clear waistline or a suit, gives a tabular
look. These tend to make a person looks thinner and taller.
• Flare pants and skirts are good examples of bell form.
COLOUR TEXTURE
Effect of Colour on different figure types
• Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) makes you appear cheerful, bright
and full of activity. They can spark a variety of emotions ranging from
comfort and warmth to hostility and anger
• Cool colours ( blue, purple, green) are more restful, soothing, relaxing
and serious). They often spark feelings of calmness as well as sadness
• Dark colours(black) makes a thick person appears slimmer
• Lighter colors allow your eyes to travel continuously around the space
so this gives the effect of a room appearing larger.
Effect of Texture on different figure types
• Texture helps to make one look bigger or smaller
• Soft, clingy fabric reveals your body shape by calling attention to the heavy
areas
• Smooth, flat textures will make you appear smaller than you are.
• Shiny, textures tend to add weight or size since they reflect light and
emphasize body curves
• Dull textures absorbs light and make you appear smaller.
• Stiff crisp textures make you look bigger because the fabric stands away
from your body. Sometimes they do conceal body flaws.
• Fuzzy surfaces are usually thicker and bulkier. They will add visual size to
the area where you wear them
Using text book answer the following
•A bulky Jacket is worn to do what?
•Large bold printed fabrics or designs does what?
•Small prints does what?
PRINCIPLES OF
DESIGN
RHYTHM EMPHASIS
Independent Research
•Effects of rhythm and emphasis of design
on different figure types.
Each student will find this out for themselves
and share.
