Travel & Tourism Industry Part 1
What is Tourism? The activities of persons  travelling to and staying   in places outside their usual environments for  not more than 1 consecutive year  forleisure, business and other purposes.
Types of tourists Business Leisure
Leisure Group travel Normally conducted by a tour director who takes care of all services from beginning to end of tour. Free independent traveller (FIT) Peoples who travel in small groups, usually couples.
Business Travel Individual travel Group travel Presentations Consultations 1 to 1 meetings investigations Group meeting -  Seminars, conferences Incentive trips Exhibitions – trade fairs, shows Corporate hospitality
Now class, have you ever gone to other places for any other purposes……??? Give me some examples……..
To watch SEA games/ Olympic game Stopover at a country during a long flight….am I correct, cher??? I know I know!!! To seek medical treatment!!

Information found Obtain information about location of the city/ place How to move from place to place What are the attractions, transportation, restaurants, and lodging available
Group Activity : 30 minutes Imagine you work as a tour guide in a local agency 1) Decide on 1 particular interest of a tourist. (e.g, shopping, ethnic cultures, sight- seeing, buy electronics products, etc) 2) Plan a 1 day trip based on this interest starting the day as early as 9am to 10pm. Itinerary will include transport, meals & etc assuming tourists are on a free and easy tour)
M.I.C.E Meetings Incentives Conventions Exhibitions
M.I.C.E Industry Provides an important source of revenue for the country.
Meetings Involve a group of people gathering for a  common purpose . This includes training sessions for employees, business seminars and religious gatherings.
Incentives Travel as a reward for sales or work performed by employees or dealers of certain products.
Conventions Refers to the gathering of a group of  delegates  to exchange ideas, views and information of mutual interests.
Exhibitions An event designed to bring in together purveyors of products, equipment and services in an environment in which they can  demonstrate their products and services  to a group of participants at a  convention or trade show .
M.I.C.E : Key players
Key players  to ensure   effective operation within the m.I.c.e industry Associations An organized body that exhibits some variety of volunteer leadership structure which may employ staff and that serves a group of people who have some interest that they share in common.
Convention centres A public/ private assembly facility that is designed to host meetings and exhibits under one roof. It also provides banquet, F&B and concession service.
Tour operators They are companies that  contracts  with hotels, transportation companies, and other suppliers to offer a  tour package . They help organise and  arrange tours/ land services  for both the participants as well as their spouses.
Hotels Provides accommodation to participants Cater meeting and convention facilities on a smaller scale.
Convention & visitor bureaus Not-for-profit organisations  designed to solicit visitors and conventions to a community. Help to  coordinate all activities  surrounding meetings and conventions to include marketing the destination, providing information about host facilities.
Travel itinerary planning
What is itinerary? Logical, interesting, and step-by-step organisation of the elements of a tour on a daily basis. There are  3 main factors  to be considered. Timing Routing Suppliers
Guidelines for planning itinerary Determine the time of the year/ day of the week How many days of tours General city tour as 1 of the 1 st  activities “ Dramatic ” last days in terms of destinations, attractions & events

Sample Tour itinerary 4 days Singapore Sight-seeing tour Day 01: Manila/ Singapore (meals on board) Depart by afternoon flight to Singapore Day 02: Singapore Breakfast at hotel After breakfast, embark on guided tour to Merlion Park, Jurong Birdpark, Singapore zoo, and end at Singapore River Dinner at clarke Quay
Day 03 Breakfast at hotel Visit to Sentosa, experiencing the island resort of Singapore. Visits to Underwater world, sky tower, and Dolphin Lagoon. Lunch at Palawan beach Head for Newton Circus for seafood dinner
Day 04 Checkout from hotel Breakfast at a local wet market Take a scenic tour to Botanical Garden after breakfast. Visits include Orchid and Ginger Gardens Lunch Leaving for the airport
Your turn to plan an itinerary (30 mins) Pair up with a classmate Imagine you work as a tour planner in a local tour agency. You are to plan for a group of  20 tourists  from  Japan  who are here in Singapore on a 3-day  shopping  trip. Present your itinerary on a piece of mahjong paper clearly provided by your teacher

Commercial Amusement park/ Theme park Shopping
Heritage includes….. Museums and historical sites Zoos and aquariums Parks and reserves Fairs and festivals
Live entertainment Special need for traveller and others seeking additional leisure-time activities. Can be classified under  1) sporting activities 2) performing arts Swan lake, Phantom of the opera blah….. Qn: Where is Olympic 2008 going to be held?
