Resources and tools for citations, continuedAlso, try Google searching for “MLA style” and “APA style”Make use of Knight Cite if needed: http://www.calvin.edu/library/knightciteIf you still have a handbook from Freshman English, use it (writing handbooks have extensive citation information)
Annotated Bib Structure & FormatBegin with an appropriately formatted heading or title page, according to the guidelines of the citation style you chooseDouble-space the whole documentUse a serif style fontDivide sources into Primary and Secondary sectionsPut sources in alphabetical order in each section (by author if there is one and by title if there isn’t)
Annotated Bib Structure & Format, continuedFor each source, start with a complete, correct citation.Following the citation, provide your annotation. 2 to 3 paragraphsAnnotations for print & online sources should include all of the following:A brief summary of the text and its purpose, including the thesis and main argumentAn evaluation of the source's content, quality, and reliability. Does the source seem reliable, and why do you think so?An explanation of how you plan to use this source in your report (if it is a primary source)
Annotated Bib Structure & Format, continuedAnnotations for interviews should include all of the following:The name, title, and credentials of the person you interviewed. The date and approximate length of the interview. The means by which the interview was conducted (in person, via telephone, or via email). What you hoped to learn by interviewing this person. The most important questions you asked in the interview, and a summary of the answers you received.Whether or not the information you received will be useful to you in your report.

Decision-Making Report
DMR OverviewYou’ll follow some of the conventions of a formal report (section headings and so forth), but use a memo format. No title page. You’ll include a separate one-page profile of your audience (instructions will be provided)Your report will include 4 to 5 pages of body content. Can be longer but not shorter. Single spaced, organized into sections with headings.A Works Cited (if using MLA) or References (if using APA) list of citations will go at the end, after the body of the report (not part of the 4 pg minimum)
DMR ScenarioYour goal is to convince a small audience of decision-makers that action needs to be taken in response to an issue or problem, and also to help them decide on what course of action to take. Keep their needs, wants, and potential objections into account as you are writing. Cover at least 3 feasible options, comparing them according to criteria that you specify early on in the report (things such as costs, timelines, resources and personnel needed, features, short term and long term outcomes, etc.). Options such as "do nothing" are not acceptable.
DMR SectionsIntroductionBrief; introduce the issue and clarify your purposeNeed for ChangePersuade your readers that they need to act, and that there’s something “in it for them.” Draw on your research where needed.Criteria for EvaluationThis can be a fairly brief section, but you need to be very specific. What criteria will you use to evaluate and compare the options? (costs, specific features, ease of implementation, short or long term benefits, number of personnel needed, etc. etc. etc.)
DMR Sections, continuedDiscussion of the OptionsSubdivide as necessaryDescribe each option and evaluate each by the criteria you’ve specified. Draw on source material as needed.ConclusionsBriefly state the overall conclusions you reached.RecommendationsMake a strong pitch for the best option (or combo of options). Remind the readers of what is in it for them. Leave them convinced and ready to act.Can combine with Conclusions section.
Using Sources in the DMRYou MUST quote directly from a minimum of 3 sources within your report. You may also paraphrase in addition to quoting, but must ALWAYS introduce your sources and provide internal citations when called for.It must ALWAYS be exceptionally clear when you are using material from a source.Ideas for introducing a source:According to x, “blah blah . . . X mentions that “blah blah . . . When I interviewed X on Oct. 4, she said “blah . . .
Using Sources in the DMR, continuedAvoid floating quotes A floating quote is un-introduced, and dropped in as a sentence on its own with no lead-inInternal (parenthetical) citations will differ depending on citation style as well as the type of source. Use them when needed.
Wrapping UpComplete directions for the Annotated Bib and DMR will be provided in the next module. There’s no full draft for the Annotated Bib – just a draft of one citation & annotation, due on Oct. 7th as a discussion post. The Annotated Bib is due on Oct. 14th (one week before the DMR).There is a full draft of the Report due (as a discussion post) on Oct. 18th.Peer critiques are due on Oct. 19th.Completed report is due on Oct. 21st.
