Modern Lingua Franca
Today, lingua franca play an important role
in global communication as well.
 The official language of international air
traffic control is English, while multilingual
places like Asia and Africa define several
unofficial lingua franca to facilitate easier
communication between ethnic groups and
regions.
Researcher’s View
“Researchers generally view
intercultural communication as
a problem created by
differences in behaviour and
world views among people who
speak different languages and
who belong to different
cultures.”
Introduction
English language is Global language. English is
not our mother tongue. It’s language
of England. English is necessary thing because
each and every requires English. English is
Language of power. To survive in this modern
era it is necessary to require basic knowledge of
English language. Second Language acquisition
(SLA) is also closely related to cognitive
psychology , and education. According to
Kreshan ,the Acquisition of a language is
naturalistic process, where as learning a
language is a conscious one.
“The objective of teaching a language… is to
enable the learner to believe in such a way that
he can participate to some degree and for certain
purposes as a member of a degree and for
certain purposes as a member of a community
other than his own. The degree to which any
particular learner may wish to participate will
vary. He may seek only to read technical
literature, or the may wish to preach the gospel
in a foreign country. These varying degrees of
participation require different levels of skill in
language performance.” (Pit Corder 1973:27)
Shivendra K. Verma categorized his
essay in sub-categorization of
languages
First Language (L1)
Second Language (L2)
Foreign Language
Classical Language
First Language
Q- What is First language?
Ans- First language means
mother tongue. Primary
language that the child
would learn. First
language has
an importance influence
on the second language
acquisition. First language
is our identity .
Second Language
Q- What is second language?
Ans- “A person’s second
language or L2, is a language
that is not the native
language of the speaker, but
that is used for
communication with the
people of another language.”
Foreign Language
Used by select group of learners
in a very restricted set of
situations.
The main objective to learn a
foreign language is to have direct
access to the speakers of these
languages and their cultures.
It enables the learners to
participate in a foreign language
like Russian is used in India for
absorbing the cultural patterns
Cultural Language
A classical language like Sanskrit provides
access to ancient culture.
Cultural languages are like: Sanskrit,
Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali,
Oriya, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam,
Gujarati.
There are more than three hundred
cultural languages spoken in India.
Hindi is the National Language which is
spoken by 40% of the population of India.
Objectives Of Language
multilingual setting, at both national
and individual levels.
roles of Languages at different levels.
“window on the world”.
Language of science and technology,
political science and international
relations.
English as an associate official
language favored by all-India
institutions.
English – medium of instruction in
several faculties at the college level and
school level as well.
Aim of Teaching English as a
Second Language
The ability to read easily with
understanding, books in English written
within proper grammar and vocabulary.
Helpful in reading texts with advanced
English.
The ability to talk fluently and understand in
English on any subject of communication.
Ability to write a content in English without
grammar errors and spelling errors.
Ability to communicate with the
person of another country or state with
different language.
It is nearly impossible for an
individual to learn each and every
language of every state or country.
English is also known as linked
language.
Each of four major skills
LSRW skills help learners to play their
communicative roles effectively
“Every social person is a bundle of
personae, a bundle of parts, each part
having its lines. If you do not know your
lines, your are no use in the play (First
1957:184)
Teacher should do…
Create an atmosphere where learning
can take place
Learners learn the language they hear
around them so teacher should use
appropriate language.
Teacher should use bilingualism
method of teaching, so that students can
understand the text properly.
Teaching- Learning process should
also be student centered learning.
Teacher should provide a comfortable
environment to the students so that they
can ask their queries in the classroom.
Teacher should not create a fear in
students.
Teacher should use effective and
interactive learning process.
