Appraise the unity of plot, setting and
characterization in a material
viewed to achieve the writer’s purpose.
•Who among you here likes to watch
films or movies?
•When we talk about films and movies,
there is always a storyline that is
creatively written by the writer.
•This storyline is made up of elements
that coherently keep the story together.
• What does every story need?
• 1. Plot
• 2. Setting
• 3. Characters
• 4. Conflict
• 5. Theme
•A plot is the sequence of events in a
story .
•It has 5 elements.
• 1.Exposition/ introduction- it establishes the
main character and the setting. It shows
what normal looks like for the characters.
•Settings- means where and when the
story happened.
•Characters- are people or animals in the
story.
• There are two types of characters.
• 1. Protagonist- good person (Bida) (Darna)
• 2. Antagonist- bad person. (Kontrabida) (Valentina)
•2.Rising action- the primary conflict/
tension is usually introduced here.
• - leads to climax
• - presents conflict (makita ang problema)
• 3.Climax- it is the most important part of
the story; tensions are highest here,
instilling in the reader a sense of
excitement, dread and urgency.
(kulbahinam nga part)
• In the climax, some questions will run into the
minds of the reader.
• Example:
• 1. “Will the character survive?”
• 2. “ What will happen if the main character and
killer meet?”
• 3. “Magbulag naba ang mga ferson?”
•4.Falling action- tension has been
released and the story begins to wind
down .
•- problems or conflicts are starting to be
resolved.
•-sulbad ang problema sa main character.
•5.Resolution/ denouement- it is where the
new world—and the new sense of normalcy
for the characters has been established here .
• - simply, the ending of the story.
• An author has purpose, reason and
intent in writing .
•Have you ever thought of the
author’s purpose why he or she
wrote the story?
•An author writes with one of four
general purposes in mind:
•1.To relate a story or to recount (saysay)
events, an author uses narrative writing.
•2.To tell what something looks like,
sounds like, or feels like, the author uses
descriptive writing. (describe ang five
senses ex. Unsa kunoy feeling sa
love..char)
•3.To convince a reader to believe an idea
or to take a course of action, the author
uses persuasive writing. (Para kuno naa
kay idea unsaon..unsaon pagmove on)
•To inform or teach the reader, the author
uses expository writing. An author’s
purpose is reflected in the way he writes
about a topic. For instance, if his purpose is
to amuse, he will use jokes or anecdotes in
his writing. (Para daw mo malingaw ug
makalimtan ang kasakit sa dughan)
