Preliminary task
How well did you plan your production and what methods did
you use?
We had a week to plan our preliminary task and agree on what theme and storyline
of our preliminary production.
We started off brainstorming ideas about theme, plot, characters and setting.
We created a storyboard which plotted each shot of our story. In the storyboard, we
noted our media knowledge of types of shots to ensure we captured all the shots
necessary for the preliminary task.
What influenced your choice of theme?
We wanted our preliminary production to fulfil our target audience’s interests. We
chose the theme of thriller to engage our audience. The theme also gave us an
opportunity to demonstrate our creativity and technical camera skills as it presented
many opportunities for us to use different camera shots, angles and effects to engage
and entertain our audience.
Was this an effective method?
Brainstorming ideas from our production allowed every member of our group to
contribute ideas and feel involved in the planning.
Finally, we voted for the story we would product. This reduce the amount of
conflict in our group.
How well did your product meet the original
proposal?
During our planning, we tried to simplify or story as much a posible to make it simple
to shoot as it was a preliminary task.bour product met our original proposal but for
one factor; the location.
We originally wanted to film in Canary Wharf however the distance of the location
was too far for our group to commute to. Canary wharf was also agreed to be an
excessive travel expense for a preliminary task. Therefore we collectively decided on a
more local location which was more convenient for our group; King's cross station.
At the back of King's cross station, there are large corporate building which resemble
canary wharf.
Camera composition and movement of shot
Camera composition is everything in viewed or being captured in a shot. These shots include closeup, mid
shots and wide shots.
Camera composition is the position of people and objects in the shot. The composition follows the rule of
third to draw the audience's’ attention to specific things in the shot.
Movement is the effect panning and tilting have on the shot. Panning makes the audience follow the
character.
Mise en scene
Mise en scene is everything on the screen during the scene.
Mise en scene is made of the following:
➢Setting
➢Props
➢Costume
➢Hair and makeup
➢Facial expression and body language
Diegetic and non diegetic sound
Diegetic sound is where the origin of the sound is visible on the screen. For example,
dialogue. This can also be referred to as actual sound.
Non Diegetic sound is where the origin of the sound cannot be seen on the screen.
For example, narration/ voiceovers or sound effects such as animal noises in the
background.
