The paper proposes a fuzzy enhancement model, named f-802.11p, to improve the backoff time selection in the IEEE 802.11p protocol for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications, addressing the inefficiencies caused by random backoff times. Simulation studies in two different environments indicate that f-802.11p significantly outperforms the traditional IEEE 802.11p in terms of physical and MAC layer busy times, total lost packets, and received beacon messages. The enhancement is based on rational decision-making algorithms that utilize parameters like vehicle speed and gain to optimize communication channel use.
