FOD costs the aviation industry $13 billion per year in direct and indirect costs. Direct costs include engine maintenance, tire replacements, and aircraft body damage from ingesting foreign objects. Indirect costs, which are much higher, include delays, cancellations, schedule disruptions, liability, and loss of customers. Repairing FOD damage to aircraft engines can exceed 20% of the original purchase price of the engine. Implementing an effective FOD control program through organizational commitment, training, accountability, and coordination can help reduce these costs and prevent injuries from FOD.
