Definitions Free Fall- An action where an object subjected to the effects of gravity Projectile- Object falling under the influence of gravity only.
Things To Know When an object is free falling, the acceleration is 9.81 m/s^2 towards the center of the earth. When a projectile is moving with a forward velocity there is a vertical component as well as a horizontal component. This results in a two step equation to find the unknown values.
More Things to know The Horizontal component (x) and the vertical component (y) are independent from each other. Near the surface of earth the acceleration do to gravity is 9.81m/s^2 Objects at the same altitude fall at the same rate no matter what their masses are.
Stair Set Example Louie is going to jump a stair set with a height of 1.5m and length 2m We must figure out the minimum velocity he must travel at in order to clear the stairs. We will also drop an apple at the same time from the same exact same height if done correctly they will hit the ground at the same time, even though Louie has a greater mass.
Our Knowns Vertical Component Vi=0 d=1.5 m a=g=9.81m/s^2 t=? Formula d=Vi(t)+1/2(at)^2 Horizontal Component v=? d=2 m t=? V=d/t
Calculations Y component 1.5m = 0(t)+1/2(9.81m/s^2)t^2 1.5m = 4.9m/s^2(t^2) 1.5m/(4.9m/s^2) = t^2 sqrt(.306s^2) = sqrt(t^2) .5532s = t X component V=2m/.5532s 3.6m/s=V
