The theme of the one day event was Internationalising UK talent. It included excellent presentations from Ian Livingstone, a panel session hosted by Jo Twist CEO of UKie, networking lunch, a showcase exhibition and elective workshops onGlobal IP, New Global Market Opportunities, Partnering with Global Games Companies and Monetising Free to Play Games in an International Market. The event was very well attended and emphasised the talent in the UK and the value of the games industry to our economy. For more details about the event and UKie, contact Daniel Wood at daniel.wood@ukie.org.uk The CRe-AM Creative Industries Community Project The CRe-AM Portal Page The Creativity Research Adaptive Roadmap Project (Project Acronym: CRe‐AM) is a 2 years EU-funded project, running from October 2013 to September 2015. CRe‐AM is part of the 2013 Work Programme on ICT, being one of the projects selected under the first Call of Objective 8.1: Technologies and scientific f oundations in the field of Creativity. The CRe-AM project aims to bridge communities of creators with communities of technology providers and innovators, in a collective, strategic intelligence and roadmapping effort to streamline, coordinate and amplify collaborative work. This will be achieved by developing, enhancing, and mainstreaming new ICT technologies and tools by addressing the needs of different sectors of the creative industries. Aims The project will involve creators who currently use ICT tools in their everyday creative practices, and will engage them in a collective dialogue with ICT researchers and developers. The objective is to empower creators by giving them access to new forms of facilitation, enhancement, and contextualization of the c reative process and its outputs. The focus will be the future ICT R&D agenda, which will develop new tools for supporting the creative processes as well as enhance and improve existing tools and platforms to be more adapted to, or to better care for, the n eeds of specific creators’ groups. Thus, the project will also aim at forming a critical mass of ICT and creative communities working together. The main target users will be individual creators and professionals, as well as SMEs, creative groups, communities, and institutions. It is extremely important for the communities of artists and creators, creative professionals, technology experts and IT designers or providers, cultural institutions and creative industries to work strategically together, in order to maximize resources, share expertise and enhance creativity. CRe-AM is a very timely project, focusing on strategic planning and structured dialogue, and particularly pertinent for meeting the current cultural, technological, and economic challenges with c reative visions and recommendations for the future. The Outcomes Main results of the project will include recommendations for policy, planning, and decision making for the creative industries and convergent plans (roadmaps) for specific future initiatives. More specifically, the benefits from CRe‐AM will include: • Bridging communities and supporting knowledge exchange for effective collaboration among the creative sector and ICT stakeholders • Raising awareness among the creative industries on related R&D results
- 2. • Building foresight capability in the form of an Observatory for ICT driven innovation in the creative industries • Setting up an open infrastructure (web platform) of roadmapping for engaging individual creators as well as stakeholder communities, and empowering them to identify the emerging visions and concerns, and to build and maintain their own dynamic roadmaps for the future. For more details of CRe-AM or to take part, visit www.cre-am.eu or email lucia.pannese@i-maginary.it propels Diabetes Study using Education and Exercise Tracking The propels study follow on booklet Diabetes and Obesity have been receiving a lot of attention in the press over recent months with numerous suggestions and ideas for tackling what will be a critical issue for global health. It is generally agreed that lifestyles play a major part in influencing both the likelihood of contracting Diabetes and of managing the condition of those suffering from it. For many people at risk of diabetes, the motivation to change diet and exercise patterns is lacking, especially when people feel reasonably healthy. This was certainly my case when, through a combination of circumstances, I decided to use myself as a guinea pig. The results I achieved in my weight, wellbeing and blood results exceeded my expectations and I determined to share my experiences with as many people as possible. Unconnected with my own personal research, I was invited through my GP doctor to take part in a Diabetes Study called propels, being run in Leicester. This study targets my age group in a multi-ethnic community and studies the impact of education and activity monitoring on selected individuals. I received my invitation to participate because I had shown pre-diabetes symptoms within the last 5 years. I recently went for an initial meeting and various tests to determine my suitability for the study and was accepted for the study on the basis that I do not have diabetes but have health parameters which are relevant to the study such as a high Body Mass Index and raised blood cholesterol levels. I hope to use the propels study to inform my own plans at the new Institute in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for tackling obesity and diabetes through enabling technologies and gamification strategies. APAN Healthcare Webcast on Enabling Technologies to Empower the Disabled Screenshot of APAN Webcast This month I took part in two webcast sessions. The first of these was a web conference on the use of ICT for healthcare. The event was organised by APAN in involved presenters in Korea, Japan and the UK. The session used web conferencing software called Vidyo which provides for multiple video participants (see image above) able to share presentation slides and communicate via audio and/or text chat. I delivered a presentation on Enabling Technologies to empower disabled people and I invited Simon Stevens, who has cerebral palsy to share his experiences within my session. Simon is a very intelligent young man who has made tremendous use of technology to overcome the challenges of his condition which leaves him with mobility and speech difficulties. Simon has a very compelling story to tell as someone with a very rare first-hand experience of enabling technologies that have transformed his life and allowed him to make a contribution to society that otherwise would have been very difficult. Simon used a text to speech facility to deliver the audio for his presentation, which is archived and available to view at www.timetag.tv/gaetss. i-CREATe2014 Singapore Conference on Assistive Technologies The second web based presentation I delivered was for the i-CREATe Conference in Singapore. This convention was a physical conference which included presentations on serious games and technologies to support health issues associated with rehabilitation, ageing and disability. For this event we used Skype to deliver the presentation so video was only used to introduce myself and answer questions after the presentation. However, using a set of tools which included TimeTag TV decribed later in this newsletter, it was possible to record my video and synchronise it with my presentation before archiving it to make it accessible via the web. The i-CREATEe presentation was on the theme of Assistive and Enabling Technologies for Disabilities and incorporated the slides created by Simon Stevens. This presentation seeks to differentiate between Assistive Technologies which generally are used to correct or compensate for disadvantages arising from a medical condition and Enabling Technologies which “add extra value” and allow individuals to fulfil their human potential through the ability to communicate more effectively, whatever their condition. Global Health Education TimeTag TV Portal New GAETSS Health Education Portal using TimeTag TV Technologies The previous two webinar presentations and a video recording of the BBC Radio Leicester Interview have provided me with an opportunity to launch a knowledge sharing initiative based on enabling technologies, health and disabilities. I have been using a trial version of TimeTag TV to archive my videos and synchronised Powerpoint presentations at www.timetag.tv/gaetss. Using a combination of tools which include video editing and captioning software, I have been able to create highly searchable content that allows viewers to go straight to video or slide content by keying in a search word or phrase. TimeTag TV also provides for a closed caption facility similar to those available on broadcast TV and movies. If you have a video and presentation file you would like to submit to this portal, I would be delighted to consider any content that is related to assistive or enabling technologies for healthcare. BBC Radio Leicester Interview on Lifestyle Technology and Gamification Institute The Tony and Julie Show Video Archive Screenshot I was a guest recently on the Tony and Julie show on BBC Radio Leicester. Tony Wadsworth and Julie Mayer interviewed me about my forthcoming relocation to Malaysia to work with Professors Rahina Ibrahim and Normahdiah Sheik Said on setting up a new Institute with a focus on Gamification and Enabling Technologies. Much of our discussion was around lifestyle technologies and whether they can be effective in helping to tackle issues such as obesity and diabetes. World Innovation Summit on Education (WISE) Accelerator Initiative WISE Accelerator Initiative The World Innovation Summit on Education (WISE) is identifying Education Projects to join the WISE Accelerator, For this inaugural year, the WISE Accelerator will support projects addressing educational challenges through the use and/or design of technology. This program is designed to provide guidance and support to high-potential, scalable projects that address educational challenges in innovative ways. If you are interested in applying and submitting your project ideas, the deadline for the 2014-15 WISE Accelerator is September 8th at 16:00 GMT. The Accelerator relies on the expertise of qualified mentors and partners to provide projects with effective strategies and concrete support to ensure their development. Each year, a cohort of seven projects will be selected to join the program. These projects will be followed for one year, a period during which they will benefit from tailor-made mentorship in order to address their specific needs. In addition, the WISE Accelerator will serve as an intermediary to connect the selected projects to an international network that will create opportunities to share knowledge and find support from donors and investors. BankTech Asia 2014 BankTech Asia 2014 – Kuala Lumpur Sept 23-24 Banking is no longer somewhere you go, but something you do. A continuation of past trends and the introduction of new trends this year include delivery, payments, competition, operations, customer experiences and marketing. Whilst the impact of any of

The banking industry will be taken into a different level each year, thanks to the guaranteed disruption from these trends. The usage of tablets and smart phones is going to continue at a rapid pace. Wearable devices to enter mainstream use are much faster than most industry experts are predicting. One of the biggest switches as the mobile banking is evolving is the use of the camera and apps, to replace the computers and laptops. Banking will be transformed by technology as the revolution is happening online and not in the physical branches. Outdated technologies in banking could lead to catastrophic outcome. IFTTT Applications and the Internet of Things WeMo Technology for Remote Device Control The “Internet of Things” promises a revolution in the way we live and work. The sensor technologies used to monitor and control devices from anywhere in the world will provide massive opportunities for innovations in data measurement, analysis, visualisation, feedback and intelligent control. Gamification strategies will make extensive use of these enabling technologies to engage, motivate and develop our capabilities to shape and manage the world we live in. In preparing for relocation to Asia, I have been experimenting with these technologies to monitor and control technology in my home in the UK. I have installed devices to detect motion and control lighting that can be accessed remotely from my iPad and/or iPhone. These devices led me to discover an innovative web site called IFTTT (If This Then That) which adds a new dimension to what you can do with applications that are linked to IFTTT e.g. Facebook, Mail, Messaging etc, extending the capabilities or compatible devices in ways that are only constrained by your imagination and the functionality of the devices. I use IFTTT to send me an SMS if motion is detected in my flat but it can also do things like send me an email or post a facebook status when I hit an exercise target.
