ON
GAGAN NAVIGATION
PRESENTED BY
Mr. KAJAVE MANISH PRAKASH
Mr. V. V Khandare
UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND TELE-COMMUNICATION ENGG.
INTRODUCTION
 The GPS aided geo augmented
navigation or GPS and geo-augmented
navigation system (GAGAN) is an
implementation of a regional satellite-based
augmentation system (SBAS) by the AAI &
ISRO.
 ISRO is establishing a regional satellite
navigation system called Indian Regional
Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS).
 Satellite Navigation service is an emerging
satellite based system with commercial and
strategic applications. ISRO is committed to
provide the satellite based Navigation
 On 15 April 2010, it was attempted to launch
the first GAGAN navigation payload. The
equipment was installed in the satellite,
GSAT-4, but, unfortunately, the launch failed
and the GEO satellites never reached its
nominal orbit.
 In May 2011, the GSAT-8 satellite carrying a
GAGAN payload was successfully launched
by the Ariane-V launch vehicle of
Arianespace from Kourou, French Guiana.
AVAILABLE NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEMS:-
HISTORY
 The first GAGAN transmitter was integrated into
the GSAT-4 geostationary satellite, and had a
goal of being operational in 2008.
 Following a series of delays, GSAT-4 was
launched on 15 April 2010, however it failed to
reach orbit after the third stage of
the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch
Vehicle Mk.II that was carrying it malfunctioned.
 On 30 December 2013, the Directorate General
of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India certified the GPS
Aided Geo Augmented Navigation (GAGAN)
system
COMMUNICATION NETWORK
IMPACT OF GAGAN FOR AVIATION
 Enabler for transition from Ground Based
Navigation to Satellite Based technology
Enable for Performance Based Navigation
Provides platform for harmonized
 Ground segment: On the ground, the GPS
data is received and processed in the 15
Indian Reference Stations (INRES),
located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru,
Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Delhi, Dibrugarh,
Gaya, Goa, Guwahati, Jaisalmer, Jammu,
Nagpur, Porbandar, Portblair, Trivandrum.
GAGAN APPLICATIONS
 Information Systems
 Power Grid
 Automatic Banking
 Precise farming,
 dispensing of fertilizers and irrigation
 Collision avoidance for railways & real
time application.
 En-route and precision approach
for aircrafts Navigational guidance
for Marine services
 Help in Fisheries
 Mining
 Management of Fleet movement
 Town planning and road
alignments
BENEFITS
 enhanced safety, reduced delays and
increased airport & airspace capacity;
 more flexible flight paths;
 enhanced surveillance capability;
 reduced congestion;
 more efficient use of airspace, including more
flexibility
 reduce pilot & controller workload.
SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY
 Safety and efficiency continue to occupy the
highest priorities in ICAO as they are Strategic
Objectives A and D of the Organization.
 Communication, Navigation and Surveillance are
three pillars on which safe Air Traffic Services are
provided over Indian airspace and airports.
 The development of air navigation infrastructure is
important as it is critical for “safety of aircraft
operations and capacity enhancements” so that
the booming aviation industry can be sustained
without compromising on safety.
BACKGROUND
 The Airports Authority of India manages and
maintains 124 airports .
 AAI provides Air Traffic Services (ATS)
consisting of CNS Services and Air Traffic
Management Services with safety over the
designated air spaces.
 Communication, Navigation and
Surveillance (CNS) provides backbone for
safe and efficient travel in Aviation sector.
CONCLUSION
India as a member State of ICAO
is taking various measures to bring
in latest technology with a view to
improve the safety of aircraft
operations across the Indian
airspace and be an integral part of
“seamless sky”.
