Mr. Philen’s notes on Chapter 2, section 1
Chapter 1, section 1: the Earth Englishman Francis Bacon “first” suggested Earth fit together like a jigsaw puzzle in 1620.
The Earth 3 rd planet in Milky Way Galaxy 93 million miles from sun Earth’s solar system consists of sun, planets, celestial bodies You should know the order of the planets Comets: spheres covered with ice and dust, leave trails of vapor Asteroids: large chunks of rocky material
The Earth – inside 24,900 miles in circumference/7,900 miles in diameter Core of earth made of iron and nickel Outer core is liquid Mantle has several layers (most of earth’s mass) Magma (molten rock) forms in mantle and rises through crust Crust – thin layer of rock at earth’s surface Continent/ocean Continental and oceanic crust
Earth’s insides…refer to page 28 http://martianchronicles.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/103949main_earth10.jpg
The Earth - outside Atmosphere – surrounds earth; layer of gases – Oxygen, Nitrogen, etc…protects earth from radiation and space debris; provides medium for weather and climate Lithosphere – crust and upper mantle – 7 continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica Hydrosphere – water elements of earth (oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, water in atmosphere) Atmosphere + Lithosphere + Hydrosphere = Biosphere ( where plants and animals live)
Continental Theory In 1912 German Alfred Wegener suggested Continental drift theory “ earth was once supercontinent that slowly drifted apart) Pangea (“all earth”) Panthalassa (ocean surrounding Pangea) Split/separation took millions of years Earth is still splitting – proof – in middle of ocean rocks are youngest in world…
End Section 1 Questions for thought: What are the elements of the biosphere? How might the Earth’s inner core affect the biosphere? And vice versa Discuss the continental theory. How do you think this theory affected people? (think about this in social and scientific terms) PLEASE, review your notes, complete your reading…
