1.PREAMBLE The guidelines on thesis preparation are designed forstudents preparing thesis in partial fulfilment of therequirementsforthe awardofPostgraduatedegreebytheJawaharlalNehru KrishiVishwa Vidyalaya.While,itisthecombinedresponsibilityofthemajorDepartment /Sectionforthesubjectmattercontent.Theformatofthethesisto bewrittenshouldbegovernedbyasetofcriteriaandstandardsinorderto maintainuniformityintheses/thesis submittedto theUniversity. Itis expected thatthe students and theiradvisorsshould carefullyreadthismanualandfollowtheformatandstandardsinutterand spirit. A thesisisascientificdocumentembodying bonafideresearchwork carriedbyastudent,onagivenproblem ortopic.Itisappropriate to mention here thata thesisasdefined byWebsterisa “proposition advanced and publiclydebated,defendedormaintainedbyacandidate for university degree”.Therefore realfacts and verifiable evidence (objectivedata)mustbereportedinthesisandnotmerelytheunsupported opinion(subjectivedata). Ifthe author’s opinions are given,they should eitherbesupported withdatacollectedduringtheinvestigationoreitherthedataofother investigations,thatsubstantiate the opinion expressed therein.The investigationshouldbeso reportedthat,ifdesired,itmaybereadily duplicatedandverified.Therefore,thetechniques(materialandmethods) oftheinvestigation,thesourcesofthedatausedandotheraspectsofthe investigationshouldbecarefullysystematicallyindicated.Athesisshould bewritteninareadableandattractivestyle. Thismanualwillhelpstudentsinmaintaininguniformityinthestyleof presentation.Thethesisisunlikelytobeaccepted,ifitdoesnotconform tothesestandards.

3.Guidelineforpreparationofpreliminarypagesofthethesis 3.1 Coverpage Itisthefirstpageofthethesisconsistingof Titleofthethesis Degreeforwhichthesisisbeingsubmitted Nameofthescholar Enrollmentnumber NameoftheDepartment NameoftheCollege Yearofsubmission 3.1.1 Title  Anappropriatetitledistinguishesthethesisfrom allothersfrom the sameareaofstudy.Itshouldbecompleteandbrief,i.e.,notmore than15wordsandcomprehensive,toconveysubstanceofthework reportedcoveringthemainthemeoftheworkdone.  Startthetitlewithkeywords.Avoid suffix‘’studyon’’,‘Effectof’,‘Influence of’etc.Abbreviations,scientificname (unless very necessary),chemical formulae,jargonsandthelikeshould tobeavoidedinthetitle.Atitlebriefly identifies the subject,indicates the purposeofstudyandintroduceskey termsandconcepts.  Itshould be exactly the same as approvedinthesynopsis.  ThefontofthetitleshouldbeArial; size20-26;standardbold.  Neverputfullstopattheendofthe title.  Starteachwordofthetitlewitha capitalletterexceptpunctuations  Wordsandphrasesshouldnotbe split.  Avoidabbreviationsinthetitle. 3.1.2 Spinetitle  Thespineofthesisshallbear, namewithshortform ofinitials, nameofdegree,Subjectandthe yearofsubmission.  Theprintingonthespineshallbe towardsthewidthsidewhenthe volumeislyingverticalforPh.D. andlengthsideforMaster. 3.1.3 Degreeforwhichthesisisbeingsubmitted  Nomenclatureofthesubjectinwhichdegreehastobeawarded shallbeas perNotification Acd/II/Q-14(IV)No.887 dated 12.6.2017 oftheUniversityasperrecommendationsmadebytheV DeansCommitteeofICAR(Appendix3). 3.1.4 Nameofthescholar Writefullnameofthestudent 2013M.Sc.(Ag)GeneticsandPlantBreedingA.BISEN R.Ravishankar Ph.D. PlantPathology 2014

Text:The text pages shallbe numbered with Indo Arabic numerals consecutivelythroughoutthethesisincludingtheappendices,Photographs, diagrams,etc.shouldbeputasfooteronthecentrebottom ofeachpagewith thesamefontandsamesizeofthetext.Thepaginationshouldstartwiththe firstpageofChapter1andshouldcontinuethroughoutthetext(including tables,figures,andappendices). 4.1Introduction Introductionisthefirstchapteranditreveals Backgroundinformation Justifyselectionoftheproblem intermsofitsrational,scientificandpractical significance.Itrequirescriticalanalysisofrelevantbackgroundinformationofthe studytojustifytheproblem. Firstmentionoftheorganism (crop,pathogen,insectetc.)inthemaintextshouldbe completeand described bytheirLatin name(binomials)accompanied bythe authority.Insubsequentdescription,onlyEnglishnamebeusedandorbinomials nameoftherequiredgenusisabbreviatedtoinitialletterwithnameofspecies withoutmentioningthenameoftheauthority. Botanicalnomenclatureshouldfollow'TheNomenclatureofCultivatedPlants'(1980 Publ.,InternationalBureau of Plant Taxonomy and Nomenclature,Tweede, Transitorium,Uithof,Utrecht,Netherlands). Importance Discussimportanceoftheselectedproblem byansweringwhatistheproblem and whythisproblem isselectedbyexplainingitseconomicimportanceandastatement pertainingtotheissue.Alwaysincluderecentstatisticsdepictingstate,nationaland internationalpicturesrelatedtoproblem. 4.2 ReviewofLiterature Reviewthemostrelevantliteratureaspectwiseinacondensedform withimportance tothefindingsratherthantheauthor.Thereviewshouldhavelinkfrom oneaspectto another.Avoidgivingirrelevantreferences. Themainobjectivesofthischapteraretoknowwhathasalreadybeendoneonthe proposedresearchprogramme;criticallyanalyzeandjustifytheproposedresearch gaporunexploredareas;demonstratethegapwherethefindingsofthethesiswillbe applicable;othermethodshavebeentriedtosolveit;showthattheproposedworkis originalorsomeworkhasalreadybeendonewithproposedgaporreportingof contrastresultsbytheworkers. Detailsofmethods,placeofworkandotherirrelevantinformationshouldbe avoided. Forcondensationofthereview somewordsnotofEnglishoriginmayalsobe utilized(Appendix8). Findingsshouldbegroupedsubjectwiseandreferenceshouldbecitedinthe chronologicalorder. Ifoneconclusionisdrawnbyseveralauthors,thenavoidrepetitionofquotationi.e., intheeventofmorereferencesinvolvingthesameaspect,quotethem withacommon statement. 4.3MaterialandMethods Thissectionexplainshowtheexperimentwasperformedwiththeincorporationof followinginformationwithoutanyinterpretation. Impartenoughdetailtojudgethe validityandaccuracyofresults,soundnessandpertinenceofinterpretationofthefindings andtheirapplication. Detailsofthelocationwhereexperimentwasperformed: Period/season/yearand placeofstudy,climateorweatherconditions,soiltypeincludingphysicochemical propertiesandothersasrelevanttothestudy.Thegeographicalpositionofthe experimentalsitemaybeidentifiedwiththehelpofcoordinates(latitudeandlongitude) andaltitude. Detailsofthematerialusedintheexperiment:viz.,crop,organism,variety,genotype, pathogen,media,pesticide,herbicide,fungicide,fertilizer,irrigation,chemical, medicine,equipment,machinery,etc.,onwhichexperimentwasconductedalongwith sourceandnatureofmaterial,activeingredientsandequipmentused.Iftheresearchis orientedtowardssurvey/socialsciencesdescriptionsoftheprocessesforselectionofsite, participants,sampling,datagatheringandanalysisarethecriticalpoints.Insurveytype experiment,mapofstudyareaisessentialtohaveaprominenteffectontheoutcomeof theexperiment.Themapsshallbeclear,withlongitudesandlatitudes,ascaleandaside locator.Useinternationallyrecognizedname/nomenclaturefordescribingmaterials.Local nameoftheorganismshallbewrittenwithScientificandEnglishcommonname. Durationandtimeofexperiment:Timingforconductingresearchanddurationofthe experimentareimportantasweather,soilandotherenvironmentalparametersvarywiththe season. Detailsofthemethodsused:Experimentaldesign,numberofreplications,layoutof theexperiments,observationsrecorded,methodsadoptedforexperimentationand recordingobservation,statisticaltoolsappliedandanalyticalmethodsemployed. Presentationofarationaleforthemethodologicalapproachisessential.Givecomplete descriptionofallexperimentalproceduresemployed.Giveonlythereference(s)incaseof standardmethod(s)used.Describenewmethodsoranyimprovementindetailtomakeit possibleforthereadertorepeattheworkwithoutclarification.
