IT sprawl has business at
the breaking point

70% captive in operations Business innovation
 and maintenance throttled to 30%
• Rigid & aging infrastructure • Time to revenue
• Application & information complexity • Cost of lost time, effort, opportunity
• Inflexible business processes • Unpredictable business cycles

Lowering the acquisition cost of storage
through industry standard economics
                    Platform Convergence

                    • Lower cost with x86 based storage
                      platforms
                    • Leverage HP’s economy of purchasing
                      scale and BladeSystem expertise
                    • Enable scale-out architectures to meet
                      demand
                    • Only HP can converge Server, Storage,
                      and Networking infrastructure

Platform Convergence removes the traditional “dedicated” storage
infrastructure, and moves the functions to industry standard storage
and server hardware coupled with software based data services.

Improving utilization and simplifying
management through virtualization
                   Virtualization

                   • Simplify storage management
                   • Create a single virtual pool of
                     capacity
                   • Virtualize arrays, storage networks,
                     and file serving
                   • Optimize storage for virtual
                     infrastructure

Virtualization technologies “abstract the physical” and make
heterogeneous and scale out systems less costly to manage. Includes
virtualization with hosts, storage systems, and storage networks.

Lowering the impact and cost of data
growth and power consumption
                    Capacity and Power Optimization

                    • Delay capacity purchases until
                      actually needed
                    • Tier storage to minimize cost and
                      meet SLAs
                    • Minimize power consumption and
                      cost
                    • Report and manage power w/
                      Insight Control

Maximizing available resources to lower CapEx and OpEx. Respond
to data growth and storage density acceleration by intelligently using
    capacity and managing power consumption.

Lowering the impact and cost of data
growth and power consumption
                     Application integration

                     • Joint server-storage reference
                       architectures
                     • Application-specific storage
                       management and performance
                       tuning
                     • Integrated server, storage,
                       networking provisioning with HP
                       Orchestration

Application specific management and tuning, solution blocks and
deployment expertise. Move towards template driven management
(i.e. BladeSystem Matrix with Insight Orchestration) for traditional IT
     and cloud.

Traditional Array – initiation

Legend

         RAID 5 disk
         group 1. Adding drives
                  2. Assign RAID levels to disk groups
     RAID 1 group
                  3. Laying out data
Stranded capacity Leaving stranded capacity – disk groups can’t access
                    4.
unused capacity from other disk groups and
    Data
                       capacity must be manually assigned
Enterprise Virtual Array – initiation

   1. EVA automatically creates one disk group – best practice is one
or two disk groups per EVA
   2. Customer selects the capacity required of Vraid1 or Vraid5
data storage and disk sparing level
   3. EVA lays out the data – all Vraid5 and Vraid1 data and spare
space is sprinkled across all the drives in the group – EVA
      format disks on the fly.
Traditional Array – add capacity

1. Add drives 4. Add more drives
2. Configure RAID 1 disk groups 5. Configure more RAID disk
                                     groups and spare
3. Lay out RAID 1 data
in RAID-1 LUNs 6. Lay out data… start over again
Enterprise Virtual Array – add capacity

 1. Add drives to the array and add drives to
    disk group
 2. LUNs are automatically stretched across
new disks & data is re-sprinkled (re-
    leveled) across all disks.

High Availability
                                        ... is driving storage
                                        requirements

1. Critical Issue

Server virtualization causes a greater
impact of a single server failure.

2. Resolution

Virtualization software vendors offer high-
availability, e.g.
• VMware Vmotion • MS Clustering What’s missing ?
• VMware HA &FT • MS Live

HP Infrastructure operating environment Optimize performance and efficiency - simplify deployment of storage for business applications HP FlexFabric Reduce the cost and complexity of storage networking with a dynamic protocol stack HP Virtual resource pools Maximize utilization, reduce impact of data growth, enable data mobility and resiliency HP Data center smart grid Reduce power footprint and gain management control over ever larger storage systems ©2009 HP Confidential
  • 6. Virtual resource pools require a virtualized storage infrastructure …to transform the economics of information Platform Convergence x86-based, scale-out storage to lower costs Storage Virtualization Improve utilization and simplify management Capacity & Power Optimization Lower the impact of explosive data growth Application integration Speed deployment and improve performance
  • 7. Lowering the acquisition cost of storage through industry standard economics Platform Convergence • Lower cost with x86 based storage platforms • Leverage HP’s economy of purchasing scale and BladeSystem expertise • Enable scale-out architectures to meet demand • Only HP can converge Server, Storage, and Networking infrastructure Platform Convergence removes the traditional “dedicated” storage infrastructure, and moves the functions to industry standard storage and server hardware coupled with software based data services. 7 10/18/2010
  • 8. Improving utilization and simplifying management through virtualization Virtualization • Simplify storage management • Create a single virtual pool of capacity • Virtualize arrays, storage networks, and file serving • Optimize storage for virtual infrastructure Virtualization technologies “abstract the physical” and make heterogeneous and scale out systems less costly to manage. Includes virtualization with hosts, storage systems, and storage networks. 8 10/18/2010
  • 9. Lowering the impact and cost of data growth and power consumption Capacity and Power Optimization • Delay capacity purchases until actually needed • Tier storage to minimize cost and meet SLAs • Minimize power consumption and cost • Report and manage power w/ Insight Control Maximizing available resources to lower CapEx and OpEx. Respond to data growth and storage density acceleration by intelligently using capacity and managing power consumption. 9 10/18/2010
  • 10. Lowering the impact and cost of data growth and power consumption Application integration • Joint server-storage reference architectures • Application-specific storage management and performance tuning • Integrated server, storage, networking provisioning with HP Orchestration Application specific management and tuning, solution blocks and deployment expertise.
