mouse or swipe of iPad……
The question is the answer
 Choose a topic you are interested in. The more background
you have in the subject, the better chance to write a good
  EE.

 Formulate a well-focussed research question. Do not let it
be too broad, narrow, vague, difficult or inappropriate.

 A good research question asks something worth answering
  within 4000 words.

 It should be clear what would count as evidence in relation
to the question. If you don’t know what evidence is needed
or can’t collect it, you can’t answer the question!
Examples of exemplary EE
                      questions
History
 The Role of Émile Zola’s “J’accuse” in The Dreyfus Affair
 Continuity and Change in Japanese policy Towards Jewish Refugees in Shanghai, 1938-1943

English
 An exploration of Jane Austen’s use of the outdoors in Emma
 The empowerment of the Feminine in JRR Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings

Biology
The effect of age and gender on the photoreceptor cells in the human retina

Physics
Investigation of the effects of slipping on the motion of a cylinder rolling down an inclined plane

Mathematics
Can the whole field grow into weed?

 Forget to analyse the research question
 Ignore the assessment criteria
 Collect and use irrelevant material
 Use the internet uncritically
 Plagiarise
 Merely describe or report (evidence must be used to
  support the argument)
 Repeat the introduction in the conclusion
 Cite sources that are not used
Plan your research
            (oh please, pretty please)
 Read the assessment criteria

 Read previous essays to identify strengths and possible pitfalls

 Spend time working out the research question (imagine the
  finished essay)

 Work out a structure for the essay

 Make the extended essay guide your new best friend

Editor's Notes

  • #11: There is the handout about this on the LMG
  • #12: Wolfram Alfa has a You tube clip. It is long but some of it can be shown.
  • #13: It’s really important to keep the bibliographic details of each resource you have used. To help you, we have these sheets, in the Harvard format to record all of the information you will need for your bibliographies. Make a habit of writing or copying the details with every resource you use. To make your life easier there are online referencing sites that will create citations in the selected style. The first one I will show you is the Online Referencing Centre for the Harvard format. Click on hyperlink. The next site is called BibMe which will compile a bibliography in the MLAQ format. Click on hyperlink. Go to the LMG, Citation references and show the links and the referencing guide.
  • #14: The Dropbox client enables users to drop any file into a designated folder that is then synced with Dropbox's web service and to any other of the user's computers and devices. While Dropbox functions as a storage service, its focus is on synchronization and sharing. It supports revision history, so files deleted from the Dropbox folder may be recovered from any of the synced computers. Show the tutorial.
