The History of the Future of Libraries

1880’s Dewey writes about “a universal catalog that would include citations to the holdings of the country’s--and ideally all-- libraries”

1940’s “ The Memex” was the future of information retrieval.

Pre-1950’s Librarians introduced reference by phone and mail.

1960’s The Library of the future included a Univac Computer and learning resource center

1990’s Librarians start discussion about how the Internet will affect information delivery.

How do we predict the future of libraries?

First, we look at library values…. Stewardship Service Intellectual Freedom Rationalism Literacy & Learning Privacy Democracy

… .first we look at library values Then connect that with societal trends Things that used to be done in public are now done online Decrease in social interaction Businesses are becoming a “destination of choice”

… .First, we look at library values ….Then connect that with societal trends Finally, look at the next generations 52% of young adults read for fun 13% of Gen Y went to the library this year 58% of Gen Y turns to the Internet first Gen Y will ask an expert over a librarian Faculty/Students prefer online resources 92% believe libraries will still be needed in the future

Future Reference…. Uses collaboration Between librarians Between experts and librarians Increases web presence Videoconferencing Virtual World Reference Screen/Document sharing Staff is trained in technical support Roving “wired” support staff “ On Call” reference

Future Patron The “invisible patron” The patron that uses the library, but never comes in Uses the library’s e-resources IN the library 24/7 patron The patron who uses the library at 2am.

Future Collections Downloadable media E-books (Kindle subscriptions?) Music (iTunes subscriptions?) Movies (Netflix subscriptions?) Technology for check-out

Will the Kindle be the future of books?

Future Library Catalog Simple interface Results ranking Full-text searching of all holdings Tagging Spell-checking Patron-placed ILL’s Patron & Professional reviews Queue system

Future Buildings “ Library as Place” User-controlled environment “ Learning Laboratory” Beyond bricks and mortar Virtual world libraries Digital libraries
