Massive #WorldCup Guide… You’ll Go
Completely Nuts

During the 2010 World Cup, an average 150,000 tweets were generated
per hour. Comparatively, this is now a drop in the bucket.
On June 17th, 2014, 8.95 million tweets were
generated during the preliminary Brazil vs.
Mexico match-up.

Do you love soccer (or football, as it’s often called)? Do
you love Twitter?
Following the World Cup on Twitter can be
intimidating. A simple keyword search often yields
mixed results.
This guide will help you hear the conversation amongst
the stadium noise.

Making the Most of the 2014 World Cup on Twitter

1. Filtering the Stadium Noise

a. Basic Search
The easiest way to follow the World Cup
action on Twitter is through search.
A search will find every tweet on
the globe that mentions a keyword.

Performing a Search
1. After logging into Twitter, find the search box, which is located
on the top right of your Twitter screen (pictured)
2. Once you find the search box, enter a keyword, and press
“Enter”
Twitter search is real-time and
incredibly powerful

for “World Cup”

performed in Hootsuite...

Remember, search can be
accessed any time within
Hootsuite by clicking the
magnifying glass icon

b. Advanced Search
Doing a keyword look-up for “World Cup” in Twitter
Search results in an overflow of results.
If we know more specifically what we’re looking for,
we can narrow down search results using search
operators (much like in Google).

Zooming in on the most relevant tweets
For example, not everyone who tweets about the World Cup is a
World Cup fan
A simple keyword look-up for “World Cup” can be
a mishmash of results

How can we narrow our search to find
more interesting and relevant tweets?

By using search operators!

Search operators can
be applied in both
Twitter and Hootsuite
using the same
techniques

What are “search operators”?
Search operators help narrow your Twitter search
results.
Hashtag “operator”:
limits search to tweets
including “#worldcup”
Language “operator”:
limits search to tweets in
English

Twitter has a vast array of search operators with infinite
possibilities!
Operator Finds tweets...
twitter search containing both "twitter" and "search". This is the default operator.
"happy hour" containing the exact phrase "happy hour".
love OR hate containing either "love" or "hate" (or both).
beer -root containing "beer" but not "root".
#haiku containing the hashtag "haiku".
from:alexiskold sent from person "alexiskold".
to:techcrunch sent to person "techcrunch".
@mashable referencing person "mashable".
Pro tip: Twitter has a great page for creating advanced search queries, click here to try it out!
You can then copy-paste the search query to Hootsuite search to save it for recurring use!

#WorldCup
The most well-known search operator is the
hashtag, which can be identified by the “#”
symbol in front of a keyword
• Hashtags are useful if you’re looking to chat with people about a
topic—the topic in this case is “#WorldCup”
• Think of the #WorldCup hashtag as a giant global party of World
Cup fans
Because #WorldCup is so massive, it’s worthwhile to use more search
operators to narrow down our results to exactly what we’re looking
for!

#WorldCup lang:en
• By using a language-specific search operator, it is possible to find only
tweets in the language of your choice
• Hence, by using the English language filter “lang:en”, all search results will
contain #WorldCup tweets exclusively in English
Here’s how to search for #WorldCup in English only:
#WorldCup lang:en
Since the #WorldCup hashtag is a global party, not
everyone is tweeting in the same language

#WorldCup lang:en -filter:links
• Excluding URLs will remove tweets from bots, hashtag hijackers, and
media broadcasters
• To exclude URLs from Twitter search, use the “-filter:links” operator—
remember to put the “-“ symbol in front of “filter:links”
Remember, the full search string is:
#WorldCup -filter:links lang:en
If your goal is to read conversation from
#WorldCup fans, exclude URLs from search

#WorldCup lang:en filter:links
To make sure all tweets include URLs, use the
“filter:links” operator
• What if you want to catch up on the latest #WorldCup news? Then you
might only want tweets containing URLs
• Filtering for URLs will remove chatty tweets, and instead fetch search
results linking to media sources and news
Here, the full search string is:
#WorldCup news filter:links lang:en

These are a lot of searches. How
do we keep track of them all and
avoid having to constantly retype
them?

c. Saving Twitter Search Streams to
Hootsuite
Doing the same searches over and over again in
Twitter or Hootsuite can be tedious.
Save multiple search streams to
Hootsuite to have continual access to
refreshing and persistent searches.

Using Hootsuite, you can save multiple
Twitter searches by following these 5
steps...

Step 1: Enter your keyword(s) in
Hootsuite, and press “Enter”.

Step 2: Click the “Save as Stream”
button.

Step 3: View your saved search in Hootsuite

Step 4: Repeat steps 1-2 with custom
search operators (in this example,
lang:en)

Step 5: View your saved searches side-by-side

d. Creating Twitter Lists
Another way to watch the #WorldCup is with Twitter lists.
What is a Twitter list? It’s a tool for tracking a specific subset of
Twitter users.
Because you don’t have to follow anyone contained in a Twitter list, this keeps your Home feed
uncluttered.
Yet it also makes following the #WorldCup more fun!

How do you create a Twitter list in
Hootsuite?

First, click on the “Add Stream” button located above your
streams...

You’ll see a dialogue box pop up.
At the top of the box, you’ll see
multiple tabs. Click the tab that
says “Lists”.

After you click lists, select your
Twitter profile.

Once your profile is selected,
select “Create a new list” and
give your list a name.

Finally, click the “Add Stream”
button to create your list.

After you create a list, you’ll want to
add people to it. Here’s how..

First, do a username search, then click on the
username.

The username’s profile view will then appear on
your screen. To add them to a list, click the “Add
to List” button.

Another dialogue box will appear on your
screen prompting you to select a Twitter
list. Once your Twitter list is selected,
click the “Save” button. The user will then
be added to the list.

Here are some examples of World Cup
Twitter lists...

National Squad Lists
For example,
Fans can create lists of national squads—
allowing you to better track tweets from
players and coaches
Pictured here is a list of the Mexican national team.

Media Lists
Another possibility is a list for favourite news sources
(eg. @nytimes, @guardian, @espn, @Grantland33…)

Fan and Friend Lists
Lists are also useful for tracking fellow soccer fans
or friends—who share their enthusiasm for the
#BeautifulGame

2. Watching Everything in
One Place

a. Hootsuite Dashboards
Twitter searches and lists are great tools for watching the #WorldCup.
But rather than getting lost in the stadium noise, it’s far better to harness its energy and
control it.
For that, try watching all your searches and lists at the
same time with Hootsuite.

Your Hootsuite dashboard would simply be a collection of
streams from Twitter (and other social networks like
Facebook).
Tabs are simply a collection of similar streams (so, for
example, you could have a “Brazil tab” with streams
relevant to the Brazilian national squad).

For example:
You could have sixteen tabs for the World Cup (one for
each team progressing to the Round of 16).
In each tab you could have the relevant team’s Twitter
search streams and Twitter lists.

What does a dashboard look like
and how is it structured?

Let’s take a closer look at what can
be viewed side-by-side in the
dashboard

With links vs. No links
• In this example, you see a search stream that
excludes URLs along with another search stream
that must include URLs
• A multi-stream view of Twitter search therefore
allows you to track tweets containing different
content

Global vs. Local
• In this example, there’s one stream for #WorldCup as
well as a similar stream with a geocode search
operator
• The geocode search operator excludes all tweets
outside a 25km radius of a localized search based on
geo-coordinates
• This allows us to follow global tweets mentioning
“#WorldCup” as well as those that are exclusively
local
Pro tip: Jump to slide 65 to see how to use the

Team vs. Fans
• In the left stream is a Twitter list containing
members of the Mexican national team
• To the right is a Twitter search of
“@miseleccionmx”—the official Twitter account of
the Mexican national team
• This allows us a more complete view between
World Cup participants and observers!
What about watching tweets from
both national teams and their fans
at the same time?

3. Extra Time
(aka “Bonus features”)

So far, we’ve shown you great tips on watching the #WorldCup through Twitter.
This final tip will teach you how to watch tweets
from inside the stadium. Literally.
Let’s take you inside the Estádio Arena das Dunas in Brazil.

This tip requires 2 things:
1. Google Chrome web browser
2. Hootsuite’s Hootlet Chrome extension

Go to the Chrome web store to install the Hootlet

Once installed, follow these steps
1. Visit Google Maps
2. Search for Estádio Arena das Dunas in Brazil
3. Look for an orange button that says, “Tweets Near Here”
Here’s what you’ll see...

A box will appear in Google Maps showing tweets from inside the stadium

Here’s a closer look...

Tweets Near here
As you see, “Tweets Near Here” displays tweets within 500
metres of Estádio Arena das Dunas.
The distance is also adjustable.

Exporting from Google Maps...
But why not save “Tweets Near Here” so you can view it
whenever you want?
To export it from Google Maps, click “Add to Hootsuite” at
the bottom of the box.

...To the Dashboard!
Once you click “Add to Hootsuite”, tweets near Estádio
Arena das Dunas will appear permanently in Hootsuite.
It can be enjoyed alongside your other #WorldCup
streams.
