Produce a glossary of terms specific to the methods and principles of sound design and production. Using a provided template, you must
research and gather definitions specific to provided glossary terms. Any definitions must be referenced with the URL link of the website you
have obtained the definition.
You must also, where possible, provide specific details of how researched definitions relate to your own production practice.
Name: Connor Martin RESEARCHED DEFINITION (provide short internet researched
definition and URL link)
DESCRIBE THE RELEVANCE OF THE
RESEARCHED TERM TO YOUR OWN
PRODUCTION PRACTICE?
SOUND DESIGN
METHODOLOGY
Foley Artistry “Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added
to film, video and other mediums in post-production to enhance
audio quality”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_(filmmaking)
We have used Foley artistry to record
sounds for tasks. This was shown in IG1
when I had to evidence ambient and
directional recordings. I also used this in
IG2 for task 2 when I recorded different
sounds for a variety of games.
Sound Libraries “A collection of sound stored on file (for example on CD’S, DVD’S, or
as digital audio files)
http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/sound-library
We have created lots of sound libraries
from different posts on our blog such as
IG2 when I created sound libraries for
my sound effects.
SOUND FILE FORMATS Uncompressed “Not compressed”
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/uncompressed
We have come across uncompressed
files in reaper when we have rendered a
sound it became uncompressed to
make the appropriate file.
.wav “Short for Waveform Audio File Format, is a Microsoft and IBM audio
file format standard for storing an audio bit stream on PC’S”
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAV
Nearly all of our sounds are exported as
.wav Files because it is the only file we
can upload to sound cloud.
.aiff “Audio Interchange File Format is an audio file format standard used
for storing sound data for personal computers and other electronic
audio devices.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Interchange_File_Format
I have not come across this yet because
I save my files as.wav files but I know
that this is a file type.
.au “A digital audio file format from sun that is used on the internet and
can be played by a java programme.”
http://www.yourdictionary.com/au-file
This is also another file format that I
haven’t used yet.

.smp “Short for Symmetric Multiprocessing, a computer architecture that
provides fast performance by making multiple CPUs available to
complete individual processes simultaneously.”
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/SMP.html
This is a multiprocessor task that I
haven’t come across yet but I could use
in the future.
Lossy Compression “The class of data encoding methods that uses inexact
approximations for representing the content that has been encoded.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_compression
I have not come across this yet.
.mp3 “The file extension for MPEG Audio Layer-3, a set of standards for
compressing and downloading audio files from the Internet.”
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mp3
The common use is to store music on a
device, we have used this in an earlier
task putting songs into a sequence or
using different sound effects and
distorting them.
AUDIO LIMITATIONS Sound Processor Unit (SPU) “To process audio signals in order to accurately reproduce the
characteristics of the sound.”
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_sound_processor?#slide=3
This is used to play sounds from a
computer.
Digital Sound Processor (DSP) “A specialized microprocessor with an architecture optimized for th3e
operational needs of digital signal processing.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_signal_processor
I haven’t used this yet but could use it
later to edit and manipulate sounds.
Random Access Memory (RAM) “A type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly.”
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/R/RAM.html
RAM is memory that stores things
temporarily and all computers use this.
Mono Audio “Where all the audio signals are mixed together and routed through a
single audio channel.”
http://www.mcsquared.com/mono-stereo.htm
I used this created single sounds such as
explosions or gunshots.
Stereo Audio “A method of sound reproduction that creates an illusion of
directionality and audible perspective.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereophonic_sound
This is used to edit the “pan” in reaper
to add effect to a sound.
Surround Sound “Surround sound is a technique for enriching the sound reproduction
quality of an audio source.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surround_sound
This gives sound a sense of background
noise which determines whether it is far
away or close up.

Direct Audio (Pulse Code
Modulation – PCM)
“DirectSound provides a low-latency interface to sound card drivers
written for Windows 95 through Windows XP and can handle the
mixing and recording of multiple audio streams.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectSound
I haven’t used this process yet.
AUDIO RECORDING
SYSTEMS
Analogue “Analogue recording is a technique used for the recording of
analogue signals which among many possibilities include audio
frequency, analogue audio and analogue video information for later
playback.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_recording
I have used analogue when recording
my script using a script and speaking
directly into a microphone.
Digital Mini Disc “The Mini Disc is an obsolete magneto-optical disc-based data storage
device for 74 minutes and, later, 80 minutes, of digitized audio or 1
gigabyte of Hi-MD data. The Sony brand audio players were on the
market from September 1992 until March 2013.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc
We haven’t used this yet.
Compact Disc (CD) “Compact disc (CD) is a digital optical disc data storage format.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_disc
CD’s are used to store audio files and
can be played on a wide range or
devices.
Digital Audio Tape (DAT) “DAT has the ability to record at higher, equal or lower sampling rates
than a CD (48, 44.1 or 32 kHz sampling rate respectively) at 16 bits
quantization.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Audio_Tape
Digital recording tapes were popular in
the late 1990 but lost popularity when
compact discs were introduced.
MIDI “MIDI (short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a technical
standard that describes a protocol, digital interface and connectors
and allows a wide variety of electronic musical instruments,
computers and other related devices to connect and communicate
with one another.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI
I used MIDI to create small tracks.
Software Sequencers “A sequencing software package designed to be loaded into a
computer. Software sequencers usually have more features and have
the advantage of showing you a lot more information at once
because they use the computer's screen and aren't locked into the
knobs or buttons or display of a hardware sequencer.”
http://www.wannaplaymusic.com/get-started/keyboard-terminology
This allowed me to create sequenced
music through the MIDI file.

Software Plug-ins “A soft-ware plug-in is an add-on for a program that adds
functionality to it. For example, a Photoshop plug-in (such as Eye
Candy) may add extra filters that you can use to manipulate images.”
http://www.techterms.com/definition/plugin
I use a wide range of software plugins
to manipulate various sounds such as
SFX like explosions to add more
ambience.
MIDI Keyboard Instruments “A MIDI keyboard is typically a piano-style user interface keyboard
device used for sending MIDI signals or commands over a USB or MIDI
cable to other devices connected and operating on the same MIDI
protocol interface.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIDI_keyboard
A MIDI keyboard is used to control the
sounds created in the MIDI files.
AUDIO SAMPLING File Size Constraints - Bit-depth “In digital audio using pulse-code modulation (PCM), bit depth is the
number of bits of information in each sample, and it directly
corresponds to the resolution of each sample.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_bit_depth
I haven’t come across this yet.
File Size Constraints - Sample
Rate
“In signal processing, sampling is the reduction of a continuous signal
to a discrete signal. A common example is the conversion of a sound
wave (a continuous signal) to a sequence of samples.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(signal_processing)
And again I haven’t come across this
yet.
