The Ultimate German Vacation Ilina Nikolova Implementation Project
Background Info I modified the webquest I found at http://web.mala.bc.ca/webquests3/2001/germany/WebQuestcarolin.html Scheduling conflicts with the computer lab = having to do this webquest before the content was really applicable (we were in Ch. 2; Ch. 3 was about travel)
About my class German 2 21 students Varied ability levels and cultural identities I created groups that were culturally and academically diverse.
Objectives/Goals Students: learn about German geography and culture. remember what is learned because it meaningful and tailored to their particular interests. become interested in one day visiting Germany.
Materials Several days in computer lab All students had Internet at home (I checked) Used portaportal.com to allow students to continue research both at home and school Students used home resources for research; all work with PowerPoint was done at school (b/c not everyone has this technology) LCD projector for presentations
Description (what should have happened) Day One: break students up into groups groups brainstorm vocabulary words they will need and decide on four German cities they will visit Homework: students add links to portaportal.com
Description (what should have happened) Day Two: students go to computer lab and do initial research for projects (45 min in lab) Homework: students prepare text for their slides, add links with appropriate pictures to PowerPoint
Description (what should have happened) Day Three: students put information into individual PowerPoints (90 minutes in lab) Day Four: students combine individual PowerPoints into group PowerPoints (45 min in lab) Day Five: presentations with LCD projector
Description (what actually happened) Day One: break students up into groups groups brainstorm vocabulary words they will need and decide on four German cities they will visit Homework: students add links to portaportal.com
Description (what actually happened) Day Two: students go to computer lab and do initial research for projects (45 min) Homework – overwhelmingly not completed : students prepare text for their slides, add links with appropriate pictures to PowerPoint
Description (what actually happened) Day Three: many students still doing research for PowerPoints (90 minutes) Day Four: many students still doing research for PowerPoints (45 min) Homework: students who have not finished must stay after school
Description (what actually happened) Day Five – About a Week Later: students present PowerPoints with LCD, groups first combine slides in class quickly (or not so quickly)
Evaluation Made it very clear orally and in writing what I expected Made students show me that they’d completed checklist on rubric
Results Negative attitudes some students slacked off then found themselves hopelessly behind as deadline approached Very varied results – some put in no effort, failed handful received almost-perfect scores majority fell somewhere in the middle.
Lessons Learned make consequences for missed homework more severe and immediate have sample PowerPoint ready - show tone and level of detail I am looking for
Objectives reached? Interest sparked in some students For most, it was more about just getting the project done. All students were at least given self-directed exposure to German culture. Open-ended project = self-differentiation, motivated students were given the chance to learn more and did.
