Importing Course Content from
One Course to Another in Moodle

Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology Moodle Series: Importing Course Content from One Course to Another in Moodle

After logging in to Moodle, click on the course which you want to copy course content from another course to.
In this case, we click on New Course.


You need to make sure that the new course has the same settings for Format and Number of weeks/topics as the course
that you want to copy the course content from. Click on Settings in the Administration block to adjust the settings.


Check the settings for Format and Number of weeks/topics.


In this case, we need to set Number of weeks/topics to 10.


Then click on the Save changes button at the bottom of the page.


To start copying the course content, click on Import in the Administration block.


On the Import page, click on the pull-down menu next to Courses I have taught
to choose the course that you want to copy the content from.


In this case, we choose Demo Course.


Then click on the Use this course button to conﬁrm choosing the course.


On the Import course data page, all resources and activities are selected by default.You can deselect any item
that you do not want to be copied to New Course by unchecking the check box next to it. In this case, we deselect Journals.


Please note that the import process will not work if any Turnitin assignment is selected.
You must therefore deselect Turnitin Assignments, if any.


After finishing unchecking items that you do not want, you should set Course files and Site files used in this course to Yes.
All the files in the course files area of Demo Course will then be imported to and reused in New Course.


If you want to abandon the import, click on the Cancel button at the bottom of the page.


Click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page to continue the import process.


A warning message in red will be shown. It reminds you that NO user data,
including posts in discussion forums and assignments submitted, will be copied to the new course.


All the selected items are listed for your conﬁrmation.


At this stage, you can still cancel the import of course content by clicking on Cancel button at the bottom of the page.


If the list is correct, click on the Continue button.


A list of items exported from Demo Course is shown at the top. The message Exported data from “from” courses
successfully. Continue to import into your “to” course will be shown at the bottom of the list when the export process
is ﬁnished. Please note that this process may take a few minutes or more.


Click on the Continue button to go to the next step.


Click on the Continue button on the Import course data page to conﬁrm
the import of course data to New Course.


A list of import process will then be displayed.


The message Import complete! Continue to your course will be shown
at the bottom when the import process is ﬁnished.


Click on the Continue button at the bottom of the page to ﬁnish.


The course content is then shown on the Topic outline page of New Course.


If more than one News Forum are created, click on the ( ) icon next to the News Forum that you want to delete.


The import of course content from Demo Course to New Course is then completed.
