- 2. ABOUT THE LABEL ā¢ Founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in 1988, Sub Pop Records is a medium-sized independent record label based in Seattle, WA. With early releases by Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, and TAD, the label is often associated with something called āthe grunge movement.ā Exploitation of this association has frequently proven financially fruitful. Later years saw record album releases from such moderately-to-somewhat-well-known artists as: Sebadoh, Sunny Day Real Estate, The Murder City Devils, Hot Hot Heat, The Shins, Iron and Wine, The Postal Service, Band of Horses, David Cross, Flight of the Conchords, Fleet Foxes, Beach House, Washed Out, and The Head and the Heart, among many other very talented and deserving artists whose managers will be contacting us shortly about inclusion in the preceding list. Of course, the label is perhaps best known for unintentionally ending the recording careers of such longstanding and excellent bands as Sleater-Kinney, Dead Moon and The Jesus and Mary Chain.
- 3. ā¢ Sub Pop Records employs somewhere between 37 and 45 people, most of whom work in our World Headquarters in Seattle. It is our intent to market and sell the recorded music (and related merchandise) of artists whose music some shifting definition of āweā really and truly love. We mean to represent these artists as faithfully and diligently as possible and hold out hope that this is enough for us to remain solvent in the face of the well-documented collapse of the music industry at large. We also enjoy laughter, good times and the company of friends.
- 4. SUB POP RECORDS IS AN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL BASED IN SEATTLE, WASHINGTON. ā¢ On the website they have several different ways of promoting the bands/ artists which they distribute the music too. Such as merchandises for the bands/ singers and the recording studio itself.
- 5. ā¢ The record company also give the option to buy their music on vinyl's. By doing this I gives the recording studio a more classic feel and that goal of being classic influences the artists that they will sign. A type of music which is not widely popular but targets only a specific set of people.

This company discovers and develops recording artists and then markets and promotes their music across a wide range of formats and platforms. This major label owns several record labels such as A&M Records, Blue note records, Mercury Nashville, Harvest, Interscope records, Island records and many more! This company is comprised of artists from all over the world (North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific) with artists such as Kanye west, will.i.am, Jessie J, 50 Cent, Dr Dre, Eminem and much more. They have been representing some of the most influential and legendary artists over the last 100 years and now has the most extensive catalog of music in the industry. - 7. ā¢ Unlike the Universal music group, sub pop have a lot less money so they are unable to sign so many big artists and would usually only get a big artist if they had them before they became big. ā¢ Sub pop have their own merchandise shop and sell music on their website, unlike Universal music group who have ownership/links with a large variety of shops and are able to get artists work published on many platforms around the world, thus creating themselves and the artist more money.
- 8. SUB POP- 1986 URL- 1934 ā¢ URL have been around for longer giving them more time to become a big company, also in the 1930ās there wouldnāt have been many labels around at the time. Subpop have to compete with many other record labels who are already established in the market which make sit harder for them when they do not have much money.
