Physical Layer – The Pitfalls
It’s strange to think that the same
                                   people that demand organization,
                                   efficiency, and strict adherence to
                                   application requirements…

Yet it happens all the time, in most automated facilities.

… wouldn’t demand the same
standards in their factory level
communication systems.

The Network Physical Design

• System Designers will
next use a Physical
diagram or floor plan to
detail the placement ,
routing, and types of
cables needed for the
actual system installation.
• At this time drop
locations and connector
types may also be
determined
•Normally the plan is
typically turned over to the
installer.

Editor's Notes

  • #7: Mission Critical vs. Ancillary – Plant networks are vital to the success of a distributed system. If they don’t run the plant does not runComplex vs. Simple – Despite what people my tout, as the networks get bigger/faster they get more complicated. The legacy networks (DH+, RIO, DeviceNet, ControlNet , Profibus, Modbus, etc. had passive media)Fluid vs. Ridged – The technology keeps advancing. 100 Meg, 1Gig, 10Gig, 40Gig, Terabit, Cat5, Cat 5e, Cat6, Cat6A, Cat7 etc. passive vs active switchesVulnerable vs. Protected – legacy networks were insulated from e-mail, viruses, etc.Long vs. Short Life Span – Networks last a long time.Organic vs. Structured – Plant networks tend to grow organically. Nodes are added over time without planning or structure.Uncontrolled vs. Regulated – Networks fall into the electrical part of a plant but there is little regulation on the consistency of design installation maintenance. This is why we have built the Reference Architecture.
  • #8: ODVA: Media Planning and Installation Manual – is basically a cable selection guide it does not cover the network infrastructure.RA/Cisco ETTF Design – Is theoretical Panduit has and “actual how to guide”, best practices, part numbers. This has not been done.
  • #9: We want to control the access to this document so that we stop our competitors from having this document.Make sure you register and download the document so that you can speak from experience when a customer asks about it.
  • #10: CISCO/RA – wrote a Reference Architecture which is the logical view of the network but it leaves the user left trying to figure out where everything goes. Panduit’s Physical Layer Reference Architecture moves you from the logical to the physical. A Reference Architecture is a model created by Systems Engineers to describe system requirements. An overview of the necessary system components are added giving the designer a way to conceptualize the system to be built. Consideration is given to the types of systems to be installed and their functions. These systems are divided into “Levels” based on hierarchy of information an data flow. Manufacturers combine these levels into functional areas that better describe the types of programs/ systems that will be used in the performance of that function. The system is split into two halves at the DMZ which prevents the Enterprise data traffic from entering the manufacturing area. Cell/Area Zones are used to describe individual manufacturing functions. Analogy – I would be like an Architect telling you that you should have electricity in your house for lighting and running appliances but not doing an electrical drawing. Panduit’s is like the electrical contractor who does the electrical drawing on where to land electrical outlet boxes, breaker panel, switches, lights etc.
  • #11: The next step is to develop the “Logical Architecture” which is based on the Logical Layer Reference shown on the previous page. These architectures describe the connectivity between the Cell and Manufacturing zones at a logical level. Specific applications are also described and necessary network components are selected to accommodate the tasks assigned to the Cell/Area Zones. Note that there are no detail specifications for placement, routing or connection types.
  • #12: CISCO/RA – wrote a Reference Architecture which is the logical view of the network but it leaves the user left trying to figure out where everything goes. Panduit’s Physical Layer Reference Architecture moves you from the logical to the physical.Analogy – I would be like an Architect telling you that you should have electricity in your house for lighting and running appliances but not doing an electrical drawing. • #14: The Network Details are a critical step since it is where decisions are made for performance security and testability. The Network Detail schematic diagram guides the installation
  • #15: Like any good project, a complete BOM is generated.
  • #16: MICE is a structured approach to rate various areas in the plant. Once an area has a rated then you take appropriate steps to mitigate issue and choose appropriate components to installAllows for better component selection based on the true needs of the environment. Allows for easier and more accurate specifications to be written that take into consideration protection, isolation and separation.Allows for proper consideration of existing components during moves, adds, and changes to work zones/cells.
