5E Lessons to
Engage, Explore, Explain,
Elaborate & Evaluate
Jennifer Gingerich
jennifergingerich@mac.com
The 5E instructional model is based on the constructivist approach
in which learners construct new ideas on top of old ideas through
a variety of experiences. Starting with Engage, learners become
curious, leading them to Explore collaboratively a variety of
materials and activities with guidance from their teacher. Students
and teachers then move to the Explain stage to communicate key
understandings. Finally learners Elaborate by applying their
understanding to the world around them. Evaluation is woven
throughout the instructional process. See how technology tools,
digital media, and your content can come together under the 5E
model to energize your instruction.
