PHD EDUCATION 2ND SEMESTER
Designing instruction is an important step to
be carried out while designing instructional
design process, also discuss learner related
sequence.
AGENDA OF PRESENTATION
What is Instructional
Design?
01
Instructional design refers to the systematic process of
translating principles of learning and instruction into plans
or specifications for instructional materials or activities.
These plans are based on principles that have been
successful in the past, namely learning theories.
Instructional designers design learning materials that are
functional as well as attractive or appealing to the users of
the product(Smith and Ragan, 1999).
Instructional Design Process
02
This phase is strongly supported by research findings from
the fields of psychology, communications, education and
technology. In other words, designers need a sound
knowledge of learning and instructional theory in order to
translate the results from the analysis phase into
specifications for the design.
Instructional Design Process
These specifications are recorded in documents, sometimes
referred to as a blueprint, and contains solutions to
questions such as:
• What is the purpose of the instructional programme and
materials?
• What are the learning outcomes and objectives?
• How will we assess the learners’newly acquired knowledge
and competencies?
• What content matter should be taught?
Instructional Design Process
• What teaching and learning strategies can we
implement to achieve the set outcomes and
objectives?
• What delivery systems will best suit the training
needs and characteristics of the target audience?
• What strategy will we implement to evaluate the
effect and effectiveness of the instructional
programme and materials?
Instructional Design Process
It is important to bear in mind that the purpose of
designing instructional programs and materials is to
improve competencies and performance in real-life
settings. During this phase designers also need to
address practical issues such as availability of
resources & staffing needs for the development of
materials and programs and cost-effectiveness.
Learner Relate Sequence
03
Teaching is the systematic presentation of content assumed
necessary for mastery within a general area of knowledge.
Instruction is a general term that means providing
knowledge in a systematic way. The characteristics of
effective instruction can be represented in four groups:
1. Planning instruction
2. Managing instruction
3. Delivering instruction
4. Evaluating instruction
Instructional Design process and Learner related sequence
Planning instruction
Planning instruction, then, involves
three steps:
1. Deciding what to teach
2. Deciding how to teach
3. Communicating realistic expectations
Planning
instruction
Managing Instruction
Deciding what to teach enables teachers to match instruction
to each student’s skill level. The process of deciding what to
teach includes:
• Assessing students’ skills
• Analyzing the instructional task
• Establishing a logical instructional sequence
• Considering contextual variables
• Analyzing instructional groupings
• Identifying gaps between actual and expected performance
Managing instruction
Delivering instruction
Instructional Delivery refers to the
interaction among the student, the
teacher, the content, and the knowledge/
skills/ dispositions. Students will need for
learning and collaborating with others in a
diverse society and rapidly changing
world.
Delivering instruction
Evaluating
instruction
Instructional evaluation involves objectively
examining your progress towards your learning
objectives for your students. You collect data
through different forms of assessment and then
evaluate the strategies you used to teach your
students.
