Reflect on your teaching experiences Provide teaching tips to other teachers Share lesson/activity ideas Provide how – to’s on using specific technology Explore important teaching and learning issues
To post class related information To communicate with parents To post online readings for students to read and react to To showcase students work To create a discussion forum on a class topic To provide online resources for students and parents
To react to thought provoking questions Journal Entries To express their opinions about topics discussed/studied in class To complete classroom writing assignments To create an ongoing portfolio of samples of their writing Showcase products of project – based learning
Infuses writing into all disciplines Facilitates connections  Students can work on math problems with peers from other classes Science experiments can be run concurrently at any number of different sites around the world with student researchers comparing and reflecting on the results Language students can create conversations with native speakers  Phys Ed students can log and analyze their workouts and diets  History students can construct resource sites for their study of ancient civilizations and conflicts ELA students can create reflective course journals Art students can showcase their best work
The  NCTE Standards  suggest the potential of Weblogs as a classroom tool.  In almost everyone of the 12 standards, blogs have obvious relevance.  Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes. Students participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members of a variety of literacy communities. Students use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., libraries, databases, computer networks, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.
Students become more critical and analytical readers Improves writing Builds relationships with peers, teachers, and others within the Weblog environment Free to use or very inexpensive
Can be a true constructivist tool Takes learning beyond the 4 walls of the classroom Facilitates reflection Supports different learning styles Can bring about topic specific expertise Teaches students the new literacies that they will need to function in the 21 st  century
Notify parents & get permission Create Blogging Terms & Conditions (Acceptable Use Policy) Choose a weblog site It’s as easy as  1 ,  2 ,  3 …
Explain to parents that the students will be expected to use the Internet as a regular part of their learning experience Advise parents that all measures will be taken to keep their child’s identity private Explain to parents how to access the blog and leave comments
Students must keep personal information out of blogs Students agree not to share their username and password with anyone besides their teachers and parents Students must always use classroom language in their blogs Be respectful when commenting on others’ blogs Here are some suggestions you may want to consider…
