Outline of Risks of Disasters
Bangladesh is vulnerable to both disasters and
climate change and ranked the seventh
extreme disaster risk-prone country in the
world as per the report from the Global Climate
Risk Index 2021
From figure (A) & (C), it is clear that,
cyclone, heavy storm hits at the
southern part of our country.
Whereas; flood attacks the northern
part of this land.
Again, From figure (B) & (C),
flash flood is happened at some
eastern part, & drought is a
phenomena of north western part.
Map of Disaster prone areas in Bangladesh Cyclone (A), Drought (B) and Flood (C).
Heaviest damages in our country
• The heaviest damage due to building collapse named Rana
Plaza tragedy (2013) despite the absence of external forces,
resulting in the deaths of 1,135 people.

Nimtoli fire killed 124 people on June
2010 in Dhaka
Flash floods in August, triggered by heavy rainfall and upstream
water flows from India, have had a devastating impact on
communities across 11 districts in the eastern regions of the
country.
Situation report by UN till 30 august, 2024
Recent heaviest damages in our country
Affected districts of Bangladesh During flood in
August
Flood in Bangladesh,
August 2024
The most affected regions are Chittagong, Khulna and Dhaka. In the months before (May to June)
and after (October to November), the most severe storms occur.
Severe cyclonic storm Remal hit coasts in Bangladesh and India on 26 May 2024.
The highest recorded wind speed was 111 km/h on 27 May 2024
The storm surge, accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall, caused flooding of 5-8 feet in the coastal
districts.
Recent heaviest damages in our country
Bangladesh has become earthquake-prone gradually.
Occasionally, the country witness small and moderate
earthquakes.
In 2023 alone, Bangladesh saw a surge in earthquakes, recording
six incidents above 5.0 on the Richter scale
The map shows that, North east part is more EQ hazardous, and
south west part is less vulnerable.
Future risks
There are sub-duction zones in the east and north of the
country while three major active faults have been found so far
having potential to generate 7.0–8.5 magnitude earthquake
Fire hazard has also become a frightening
phenomenon in urban area. Amid poor
enforcement of safety rules, the number of
fire incidents has risen in the last four years.
Future risks
Fire incident in a Market In Dhaka on
April 04, 2023
At least 74 people were killed by
lightning strikes during April to mid of
May, 2024
An average of 300 lightning-related
fatalities annually are recorded in
Bangladesh, according to the UN.

Though building regulatory body scrutinize the design of buildings and approval of
private buildings, sometimes the approved designs are violated during the
construction phase. This faulty construction may cause disaster hazards in the
country.
No quality controls of construction work but inspection is very improper due to
manpower and logistics.
Buildings without building permission
Quality of materials of private building checking is not monitored by govt.
authority yet due to proper manpower and resources.
There have authority to demolish the unauthorized part of buildings but it is not
signicant.
Non-compliant designs, poor quality of materials.
Inadequacy of proper building code compliances.
Lack of awareness about building disaster of common people.
