Solution Focused
Approaches
Rapport Building
• In pairs find 5 things that you have in common with each
other.
• However……
– NOT:
– - work related
– - chocolate
– - shopping
– - football
• Try and find some challenging ones – ones that go beyond
the “we are both (fe)male”
What are Solution
Focused Approaches?
PROBLEM FOCUSED CYCLE
Less
collaboration
Less
emotional energy Blame
Who / what is
causing it?
Less
change
We have a
problem!
What is the
problem?
SOLUTION FOCUSED CYCLE
Notice it
happening
More
change
Who /
what
helps
More emotional
energy
What did you
do?
More
collaboration
What would we
like
instead?
Asking good questions…
• Book, play, TV etc.
• Partner asks lots of curious questions
• However, questions may only start with:
– WHAT
– WHERE
– WHEN
– HOW
Please note – “WHO” & “WHY” are forbidden!!

Sticky Issues
• 5 mins – A presents their issue – B & C
LISTEN without interrupting
• 3 mins – B & C ask curios, detail &
clarifying questions
• 7 mins – A “eavesdrops” on B & C
• What seems to be the main issue?
• What questions does “A’s” sticky issue
raise
• What didn’t you hear that you wonder
about?
• OPTIONAL = Debrief
Resource Interview
• Ask your partner to talk about something they
have achieved in their life that makes them
feel proud and which has nothing to do with
their professional life
• Your role is to be absolutely
fascinated
Some possible questions…
• How did you do that?
• Tell me more about that…
• What else?
• What do you think this says about you?
• Who wouldn’t be surprised that you were able to
achieve this?
DO NOT tell your story
DO take notes!
