Roles for today’s 1st Activity
Interviewee: Think of a challenging situation
you have faced in the last two years.
Interviewer: Find out what positive steps (or
coping strategies) the interviewee used to
deal with the situation.
Observer: Actively listen to the dialogue and
look for examples of solution focused
questions AND responses.
What does it mean to take a
solution focused approach?
Solution Focused Approaches
Traditional
‘Therapy’
The Past The Barrier to
Learning (Problem)
Future
Goals
Principles of Practice (1)
oPeople generally want things to get
better.
oEveryone has a wealth of resources
within them.
oThe problem is the problem.
oChange is inevitable and is happening
all the time.
oThere are always exceptions to the
problem.
Principles of Practice (2)
oIf it works - do more of it; if it doesn’t -
do something different.
oUse the student’s own view of the
solution pattern.
oBig problems don’t always need big
solutions.
oUnderstanding the cause of the problem
is not always necessary.
Why use Solution Focused techniques?
To move away from focusing on the
‘problem’ or barrier to learning.
To identify what is already working.
To find examples of ‘success’ and
increase the student’s awareness of their
own skills and strengths.
To reduce the risk of dependency or
‘learned helplessness’

Scaling
Scaling

• Name poles and interim points appropriately
(eg. 1 = worst / 10 = best)
• Decide where on the scale the situation is
now
• What would need to happen for the
situation to move one point closer to ‘best’?
Activity 2
In your same small groups, discuss your level
of confidence in using assistive technology
with your students. Each person in the
group should aim to ‘scale’ their current
situation.
Then, take it in turn to say what would
need to happen (or change) for you to move
one point up the scale.
Between now and Session 7!
Everyone to prepare a
short (5 minute)
presentation - sharing your
experience(s) of applying
a ‘SolFoc’ approach to a
situation encountered at
home or work.
