Identifying Parts of a Word Window Creating and Saving Documents Working with Text Spelling and Grammar Functions Formatting Paragraphs Creating Tables Adding Graphics Formatting Pages Advanced Functions

Menu—pull down list with all functions Toolbars—group tools by type of function and include an icon, or picture Quick keys—series of keys that, when pressed together, produce desired function.
Toolbars display individual functions with a picture icon. There are several toolbars, and you can turn them on and off. Menu bar is horizontal across top and contains all commands for Word—even those in toolbars. Toolbar and Menu Tutorial
Creating a Document can be done four ways Open Word—a new document is automatically created. In the menu go to File>New...  In the standard toolbar, click the New Document button.  Quick key access: Ctrl+N Save and Save As—there is a difference! Save and Save As Tutorial
Backspace/Delete Backspace removes what is in front of the cursor Delete removes what is before the cursor Undo/Repeat Allows you to go back when you have made a mistake or go forward again if you have used Undo. Working with Text Tutorial
Cutting, Copying, and Pasting Cutting removes highlighted text from document and sends it to clipboard Copying leaves highlighted text but copies to clipboard Pasting means inserting cut or copied text Copy and Paste Tutorial
AutoCorrect is a function that fixes misspellings based on most likely option. Some words do not have a likely option SpellCheck underlines a misspelling in red GrammarCheck underlines in green AutoCorrect Tutorial  & Spell Check Tutorial .
There are several options for changing the look of text:  bold ,  italic ,  underline ,  color , and  size , for example. Remember, accessible three ways—whichever suits your personal style. View a  tutorial on formatting text .
You can manipulate the lines of text in a paragraph in a number of ways. Below are the most important you will use: Align Text (Left, right, center, justified) Set Line and Paragraph Spacing  Working with Margins
More ways to format text:  Indent Text using tabs Using the Ruler (setting custom tabs) Bulleted and Numbered lists  Tab type Ruler
Used for storing columns and rows of data best viewed in a grid Also can be used as a formatting tool to align text. Working with Tables Editing Tables
Pictures are fun and useful in illustrating a point—but don’t overdo it! Clip Art Insert your own from file Working with Pictures  Objects are simpler—arrows, boxes, basic shapes—but are treated much the same Built in to Word Working with Objects
Symbols Useful for currency, foreign languages, and custom bullets  Insert Symbols  Headers and Footers Info in either is on every page—useful for page numbers Headers and Footers  Reveal Formatting  Shows non-print characters Useful for cleaning up a document Formatting
Use text boxes when you need to: change the direction of the text  move text to a place on page not in line with rest of text Text Boxes Tutorial Columns are a space-saver if appropriate for your document Two is standard, but you can have three, four, etc. Working with Columns

  • #7: Title Bar Displays the document name followed by a program name. Menu Bar Contains a list of options to manage and customize documents. Standard Toolbar Contains shortcut buttons for the most popular commands. Formatting Toolbar Contains buttons used for formatting. Ruler Used to set margins, indents, and tabs. Insertion Point The location where the next character appears. End-of-Document Marker Indicates the end of the document. Help Provides quick access to Help topics.
