What is IoT?
• The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical
devices, vehicles, machines, and other items
• embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators,
and connectivity
• which enables these things to connect and exchange data
• creating opportunities for more direct integration of the
physical world into computer-based systems,
• resulting in efficiency improvements, economic benefits,
and reduced human exertions.

Growth of Connected Devices

Big Data
• Any collection of data sets so large and complex
that it becomes difficult to process using traditional
data processing applications.
• There is a huge volume of data coming in from all
the connected devices.
• These data are in different formats and are
generated from different systems.
• Analyzing those data is beyond the scope of
traditional methodologies.
• There is always an uncertainty and a misguidance
related to such a large amount of data.

• Devices and Sensors are collecting data everywhere
– Thermal Sensors,Accelerometers, Gyroscopes, Cameras
– At your office, car, home, while you’re walking, working
• Those data are sent through networks to other destinations, devices, applications and people.
– A cloud platform,A private network,A Data Center
• Then those data are analyzed to create information that makes sense
– Generate reports, Visualize, Sort, Filter and Arrange
• Decisions and actions are made according to that information
– Send notifications/alerts, Communicate to other systems/users

the table for supply chain management. Everyone in the supply chain, right from the manufacturer to
the customer, benefits from the improvements that IoT brings in. Whether it’s vendor management,
fleet management, product improvement, equipment maintenance, or reverse logistics… IoT is
transforming processes for the better, already.

Asset Tracking
• Tracking numbers and bar codes used to be the standard method for managing goods
throughout the supply chain.
• But with the IoT, those methods are no longer the most expedient.
• New RFID and GPS sensors can track products “from floor to store” and even beyond.
• At any point in time, manufacturers can use these sensors to gain granular data like the
temperature at which an item was stored, how long it spent in cargo, and even how
long it took to fly off the shelf.
• The type of data gained from the IoT can help companies get a tighter grip on quality
control, on-time deliveries, and product forecasting.

Vendor Relations
• The data obtained through asset tracking is also important because it allows
companies to tweak their own production schedules, as well as recognize vendor
relationships that may be costing them money.
• That’s a huge incentive to pay closer attention to how your vendors are handling the
supplies they’re sending you, and how they’re handling your product once it’s made.
• Higher quality goods mean better relationships with customers—and better customer
retention overall.

Inventory Management
• IoT sensors can provide far more accurate inventories than humans can manage
alone.
• Amazon is using WiFi robots to scan QR codes on its products to track and triage its
orders. Imagine being able to track your inventory—including the supplies you have in
stock for future manufacturing—at the click of a button.
• You’d never miss a deadline again. And again, all that data can be used to find trends
to make manufacturing schedules even more efficient.
• Better product lifecycle management

Customer Insights
• Because of the massive data captured by IoT devices, supply chains will have access
to unprecedented quantity and quality of data related to product use, both by
internal and external stakeholders.
• The information can then be used to alter product attributes such that the most
important requirements are fulfilled most effectively.

Connected Fleets
• Commercial vehicles are increasingly being connected to powerful and feature rich
backend systems.
• Ensure that all your carriers (be it shipping containers, suppliers’ delivery trucks, or
your van out for delivery) are connected.
• Manufacturers are using it to get better products to their customers, faster.
