This document summarizes a research paper on improving the control method of a Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) under distorted and unbalanced load conditions. The UPQC consists of both series and shunt active power filters to improve power quality on both the source and load sides. Simplified control techniques are described for controlling the shunt active power filter using constant power control and synchronous reference frame theory. The series active power filter is controlled using synchronous reference frame theory with a three phase locked loop. The control models for both filters are presented. The proposed control methods aim to mitigate voltage distortions and current harmonics on both sides simultaneously with reactive power compensation using minimal voltage and current measurements.
