Scenario
The media industries are expanding on a national and global level. Recruitment to the sector has
accelerated offering new professional opportunities. There are more people working in the media today
than in any other employment sector. Developments over the last two decades have also taken place
across the sector in response to technological changes, with a notable impact on media production,
distribution and patterns of employment. Other wider developments include deregulation and the debate
over the status and funding of public service broadcasting. The ongoing developments in digital media
technology are creating a highly mixed and competitive environment. All these developments will affect
those seeking employment in the media sector.
This unit aims to give you an understanding of the career opportunities within the creative media
sector.
Your task is to create a blog which will allow you to promote your qualifications, skills and achievements
in media production. The aim of this blog to help you to further your career in media, by further study or
employment.
For assessment of this unit you need to produce a blog with relevant information about careers in the
media industry.
The blog posts will have the following titles:
Task 1 Research job roles within the media
Task 2 Create a CV and opening statement which describes your skills and aspirations
Task 3 Select and add a range of production work from your BTEC which best reflects your skills in
media production

Task 1 – Researching Employment Opportunities and Job Roles in the Media
Sector
Produce a blog article exploring Employment opportunities, the article will
have 2 parts:
Part 1
• Describe difference types of work and contracts including full-time; part-
time; freelance; shift work; permanent; temporary; multiskilled;
voluntary; casual; hourly paid; piecework;
• Describe different recruitment methods, including press, personal
contacts, networking, word of mouth, internet
• Job roles: eg creative, technical, editorial, marketing, managerial,
administrative, legal, financial
Part 2
• Choose 4 job roles within the media sector
• Research these roles, describe the specific sector they belong to and the
role they play within the media sector
• Describe the aim of the role, what would be a typical “Day in the Life…”
• Describe how you would hope to gain employment within this role e.g.
education, training, work experience and volunteering

Produce a personal statement which can be used a covering letter to
accompany a job application and CV or a university application
• Include information on your current course, qualifications, hobbies
and part time work

• Include information on professional development, self-training;
functional skills (ICT, Mathematics, English)
• Include information on Professional behaviour: reliability; attendance
and punctuality; commitment; efficiency; self-presentation;
communication skills; contribution to team projects; time
management; personal responsibility
