Networking Example #1 My Goal: Gain experience working in non-profit industry How I established the connection: Volunteered as board member for professonal association AWIS Established mentee/mentor relationship with AWIS member, former biochemist who moved into nonprofit management She informed me about volunteer opportunity with non-profit organization
- 13. Networking Example #2 My Goal: Move into biotechnology sales & technical support Key point: sales hiring managers look for someone who will get along with rest of of team

Networking Example #2 (cont’d) How I established the connection: I was customer of future colleague and took time to get to know him whenever he came to work for our group When job opening in his group was posted, I asked him to introduce me to future coworkers, with whom I met prior to a job interview to establish relationships with them Meeting with future coworkers helped land me the interview AND the job!
- 15. Networking Example #3: Networking works both ways! Networking is an alliance that should benefit both parties! Networking and mentoring go hand-in-hand!

Networking Example #3 (cont’d) Goal: find job in protein purification How I established the connection: friend from social activity (climbing) had colleague working in group with job opening End result: I completed telephone interview and was offered in-person interview! Job was not exactly a great match for my interests, but I let hiring manager know of friend who fit job better I help my friend AND the hiring manager!
- 17. Why use online networking? With online networking, your possible network is EXPANDED to the digital world ! Like face-to-face networking, online you can… … learn more about a new industry … make contacts for informational interviews … make connections with employees of a target industry or company – think “hidden jobs”!
- 18. How to use online networking? Scenario 1: You seek to enter the Human Resources field. You’ve completed an HR certificate but lack real-world experience. How to land that first job???
- 19. Use LinkedIn to establish contacts in your target industry! Search via job title – is a friend of friend currently employed in HR? Request informational interviews. Join LinkedIn groups in target industry allows you to send messages to members of group
