Lab# 01
Introduction to Engineering
Material
MM141L
Spring 2023
By Umair Naseer
Learning
Outcomes
The lab is related to MM-101 course.
It’s an exercise to the theory you all are studying
in Materials and Nanotechnology course.
It not only covers the basis of materials in
materials engineering field but also in
mechanical, electrical and computer engineering
fields.
Why
Advanced
materials?
• Advanced materials are those that are developed
over the past 30 years or so and are being developed
at present, that exhibit greater strength, higher
strength density ratios, greater hardness, and/or one
or more superior thermal, electrical, optical, or
chemical properties when compared with traditional
materials.
• Advanced ceramics, metals, and polymers, including
composites of these, offer the promise of decreased
energy consumption, better performance at lower
cost, and less dependence on imports of strategic and
critical materials.
Advanced
Materials
Nature is full of magic materials which
are to be discovered in forms suitable
to our needs such magical materials are
also called intelligent or smart
materials.
They can sense, actuate, stimulate, and
process responses.
WHY?
Improved
properties
like:
Weight
Strength
Formability
Conductivity
Cost/benefit ratio
Challenges!
The problems faced today:
•Improved fuel economy
•Improved performance
•Reduced emission
Solution
•Body structure weight reduction
Classes
• Metals
• Ceramics
• Polymers
• Semiconductors
• Biomaterials
• Smart materials
Types of smart materials
• Graphene
• Piezoelectric materials
• Shape memory materials
• Hydroxyapatite
• Ultra-hydrophobic materials
• Hydrogels
• Aerogels
• Transistors (3D circuits)

Hydrogels
Aerogels
Electronic advanced materials
1. Integrated circuits
2. Printed circuit boards
3. Transistors
• The two most important things are:
1. Efficiency
2. The operations they perform
Integrated circuits
“Assembly of interconnected electrical components
which is fabricated on a single unit”
• Materials
1. Silicon
2. Gold and aluminum
3. Gold plating of pins/legs
4. Graphene and CNTs
3D integrated circuits
Printed circuit boards
“The board with an in build circuit for the connection
to link integrated circuits, resistors, capacitors and
other electronic components”
• Materials
1. Composite of polymers and glass fibers
2. Copper used in platting of linking circuits
