Task versus Vehicle-Based Control Paradigms in Multiple
Unmanned Vehicle Supervision by a Single Operator
There has recently been a significant amount of activity in developing
supervisory control algorithms for multiple unmanned aerial vehicle
operation by a single operator. While previous work has demonstrated
the favorable impacts that arise in the introduction of increasingly
sophisticated autonomy algorithms, little work has performed an
explicit comparison of different types of multiple unmanned vehicle
control architectures on operator performance and workload. This
paper compares a vehicle-based paradigm (where a single operator
individually assigns tasks to unmanned assets) to a task-based paradigm
(where the operator generates a task list, which is then given to the
group of vehicles that determine how to best divide the tasks among
themselves.) The results demonstrate significant advantages in using a
task-based paradigm for both overall performance and robustness to
increased workload. This effort also demonstrated that while previous
video gaming experience mattered for performance, the degree of
experience that demonstrated benefit was minimal.

Implementation of a High-Efficiency, High-Lifetime, and Low-
Cost Converter for an Autonomous Photovoltaic Water
Pumping System
This paper proposes a new converter for photovoltaic (PV) water
pumping or treatment systems without the use of chemical storage
elements, such as batteries. The converter is designed to drive a three-
phase induction motor directly from PV energy. The use of a three-
phase induction motor presents a better solution to the commercial dc
motor water pumping system. The development is oriented to achieve
a more efficient, reliable, maintenance-free, and cheaper solution than
the standard ones that use dc motors or low-voltage synchronous
motors. The developed system is based on a current-fed multiresonant
converter also known as resonant two-inductor boost converter (TIBC)
and a full-bridge three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). The classic
topology of the TIBC has features like high voltage gain and low input
current ripple. In this paper, it is further improved with the use of a
nonisolated recovery snubber along with a hysteresis controller and the
use of a constant duty cycle control to improve its efficiency.

Implementing Intelligent Traffic Control System for
Congestion Control, Ambulance Clearance, and Stolen Vehicle
Detection.
This paper presents an intelligent traffic control system to pass
emergency vehicles smoothly. Each individual vehicle is equipped with
special radio frequency identification (RFID) tag (placed at a strategic
location), which makes it impossible to remove or destroy. We use RFID
reader, NSK EDK-125-TTL, and PIC16F877A system-on-chip to read the
RFID tags attached to the vehicle. It counts number of vehicles that
passes on a particular path during a specified duration. It also
determines the network congestion, and hence the green light duration
for that path. If the RFID-tag-read belongs to the stolen vehicle, then a
message is sent using GSM SIM300 to the police control room. In
addition, when an ambulance is approaching the junction, it will
communicate to the traffic controller in the junction to turn ON the
green light. This module uses ZigBee modules on CC2500 and
PIC16F877A system-on-chip for wireless communications between the
ambulance and traffic controller. The prototype was tested under
different combinations of inputs in our wireless communication
laboratory and experimental results were found as expected.

An Improved Single-Phase Active-Front-End Rectifier System
for Use with Three- Phase Variable-Frequency Drives
In many rural areas, due to unavailability of three-phase ac power,
three-phase variable-frequency drives (VFDs) are often required to
operate from a single-phase ac source. Powering up three-phase VFDs
from single-phase ac source requires addressing many issues: higher
RMS value of input diode current, higher ripple voltage across the dc
bus capacitor, higher peak input current, higher input current
distortion, lower power factor, and poorer system efficiency. All of
these lead to severe derating of VFDs for single-phase applications. A
new low-cost single-phase active circuit based on injecting current into
the midpoint of the dc bus employing only one bidirectional switch is
proposed here. The bidirectional switch carries current for less than a
quarter cycle and is rated accordingly. The presence of a three-phase
diode bridge rectifier lends itself to better distribute the higher input
root-mean-square current so that the diodes need not carry current
higher than their nominal rating. The proposed method shows that
VFDs need not be derated to achieve rated output power. Test results
from a 15-hp 230-V system are given to prove the concept.

A Family of Soft-Switching DC–DC Converters Based on a
Phase-Shift-Controlled Active Boost Rectifier
High efficiency and high power density can be achieved with a dc-dc
transformer by operating all the switches at a fixed 50% duty cycle.
However, the output voltage of the dc-dc transformer cannot be
regulated. Novel rectifiers named active boost rectifiers (ABRs) are
proposed in this paper. Basically, an ABR is composed of a traditional
diode rectifier and a bidirectional switch. By adopting phase-shift
control between the primary- and secondary-side switches, the output
voltage regulation can be achieved when introducing the ABR to a dc-dc
transformer. As a result, a family of novel soft-switching dc-dc
converters is harvested. When the proposed converter operates in the
soft-switching continuous conduction mode, zero-voltage-switching
(ZVS) performance for all the primary- and secondary-side switches is
achieved. When the converter operates in the discontinuous
conduction mode, zero current switching (ZCS) for the primary-side
switches and ZVS for the secondary-side switches are achieved.
Furthermore, the diode reverse-recovery problem is alleviated by
employing the ABR and phase-shift control scheme.

Hybrid Transformer ZVS/ZCS DC–DC Converter With
Optimized Magnetics and Improved Power Devices Utilization
for Photovoltaic Module Applications
This paper presents a nonisolated, high boost ratio dc-dc converter with
the application for photovoltaic (PV) modules. The proposed converter
utilizes a hybrid transformer to incorporate the resonant operation
mode into a traditional high boost ratio active-clamp coupled-inductor
pulse-width-modulation dc-dc converter, achieving zero-voltage-
switching (ZVS) turn-on of active switches and zero-current-switching
turn-off of diodes. As a result of the inductive and capacitive energy
being transferred simultaneously within the whole switching period,
power device utilization (PDU) is improved and magnetic utilization
(MU) is optimized. The improved PDU allows reduction of the silicon
area required to realize the power devices of the converter. The
optimized MU reduces the dc-bias of magnetizing current in the
magnetic core, leading to smaller sized magnetics. Since the
magnetizing current has low dc-bias, the ripple magnetizing current can
be utilized to assist ZVS of main switch, while maintaining low root-
mean-square (RMS) conduction loss.

Wireless Sensing and Vibration Control With Increased
Redundancy and Robustness Design
Control systems with long distance sensor and actuator wiring have the
problem of high system cost and increased sensor noise. Wireless
sensor network (WSN)-based control systems are an alternative
solution involving lower setup and maintenance costs and reduced
sensor noise. However, WSN-based control systems also encounter
problems such as possible data loss, irregular sampling periods (due to
the uncertainty of the wireless channel), and the possibility of sensor
breakdown (due to the increased complexity of the overall control
system). In this paper, a wireless microcontroller-based control system
is designed and implemented to wirelessly perform vibration control.
The wireless microcontroller-based system is quite different from
regular control systems due to its limited speed and computational
power. Hardware, software, and control algorithm design are described
in detail to demonstrate this prototype. Model and system state
compensation is used in the wireless control system to solve the
problems of data loss and sensor breakdown.

Mixed Sound Event Verification on Wireless Sensor Network
for Home Automation
In this paper, we present the problem of mixed sound event verification
in a wireless sensor network for home automation systems. In home
automation systems, the sound recognized by the system becomes the
basis for performing certain tasks. However, if a target source is mixed
with another sound due to simultaneous occurrence, the system would
generate poor recognition results, subsequently leading to
inappropriate responses. To handle such problems, this study proposes
a framework, which consists of sound separation and sound verification
techniques based on a wireless sensor network (WSN), to realize
sound-triggered automation. In the sound separation phase, we
present a convolutive blind source separation system with source
number estimation using time-frequency clustering. An accurate mixing
matrix can be estimated by the proposed phase compensation
technique and used for reconstructing the separated sound sources. In
the verification phase, Mel frequency cepstral coefficients and Fisher
scores that are derived from the wavelet packet decomposition of
signals are used as features for support vector machines.

WSN-Based Smart Sensors and Actuator for Power
Management in Intelligent Buildings
The design and development of a smart monitoring and controlling
system for household electrical appliances in real time has been
reported in this paper. The system principally monitors electrical
parameters of household appliances such as voltage and current and
subsequently calculates the power consumed. The novelty of this
system is the implementation of the controlling mechanism of
appliances in different ways. The developed system is a low-cost and
flexible in operation and thus can save electricity expense of the
consumers. The prototype has been extensively tested in real-life
situations and experimental results are very encouraging.

A Bendable and Wearable Cardio respiratory Monitoring
Device Fusing Two Noncontact Sensor Principles.
This paper presents a mobile device for monitoring respiration and
pulse. The device is realized as a bendable inlay, which can be put into a
shirt pocket or the inside pocket of a jacket. In order to achieve
optimum monitoring performance, the device combines two sensor
principles both working in a noncontact way through several layers of
cotton or other textiles. One sensor is based on magnetic induction and
is intended for respiratory monitoring, the other one is a reflective
photoplethysmographic sensor intended for pulse detection.
Furthermore, since each sensor signal shows a certain dependence on
both physiological parameters, fusing the sensor signals renders the
possibility of signal coverage enhancement.

The system principally monitors electrical parameters of household appliances such as voltage and current and subsequently calculates the power consumed. The novelty of this system is the implementation of the controlling mechanism of appliances in different ways. The developed system is a low-cost and flexible in operation and thus can save electricity expense of the consumers. The prototype has been extensively tested in real-life situations and experimental results are very encouraging.

This paper presents a mobile device for monitoring respiration and pulse. The device is realized as a bendable inlay, which can be put into a shirt pocket or the inside pocket of a jacket. In order to achieve optimum monitoring performance, the device combines two sensor principles both working in a noncontact way through several layers of cotton or other textiles. One sensor is based on magnetic induction and is intended for respiratory monitoring, the other one is a reflective photoplethysmographic sensor intended for pulse detection. Furthermore, since each sensor signal shows a certain dependence on both physiological parameters, fusing the sensor signals renders the possibility of signal coverage enhancement.
