GAME DESIGN
What were we doing before?
What skills have you learnt in Blender?
This week
We are going to begin your 3D project in
earnest.
For your 3D project you will
be given a client brief
Sci-Fi FPS Fantasy RPG Modern Racer
You will need to plan a game level and all
the models needed for your chosen brief
Researching your ideas
Creating concept art for your ideas
Create & texture the models in
Blender
Then arrange your models in your
scene and render some images
You will need to…
• Manage your time
• Plan effectively
• Research your idea
• Create concept art or overhead plans
• Create a proposal for your game level
• Create 3D models
• Create a 3D environment and arrange your
models in them
• Render out 360 images of your environment
“How many models will I need to
create?”
You will need to create a minimum of 6 models,
which should show off your modelling &
texturing skills.
You will then need to create an environment and
arrange them in it, rendering out images from at
least 4 different camera angles.
Dates: Planning
31.01.18
Begin pre-production
planning for an
environment and models
25.04.18
Hand in pre-production
portfolio
Dates: Modelling
31.01.18
Begin creating 3D
models
23.5.18
Hand in final renders of
models & environment
Step 1: Brief
If you’re struggling for ideas pick 1 of the game
briefs from below.
Sci-Fi
FPS
Fantasy
RPG
Modern
Racer

mins
Step 2
We need to find out what people expect to see from each type
of game (ie. Its Key Visual Themes)
20
mins
For your game type create:
• 1 x mood-board for its genre
(eg. Sci-fi)
• 1 x mood board for its game
type (eg.FPS)
Step 2: Mood Board
• You should look at movies, games, artwork,
books, etc… to find out the defining features
of each.
Step 3: Annotate mood Boards
Now, write notes on your mood-board
explaining what you have found out
This is a robot from “The Terminator” films. People
expect to see robots or cyborgs in science-fiction themed
games. They are often used as enemies in computer
games.

Step 4
Whole class feedback….

mins
Step 5: Initial ideas
You need to come up with a concept for a game.
Your concept should explain:
– who the avatar is
– What their goal is
– What the games story is (in its simplest form)
– What challenges they face
– How they can overcome these challenges
Create a brainstorm for this. When you’re done
photograph the brainstorm and submit it to the
Pre-Production Portfolio assignment on Moodle.
20
mins
Step 6: The Blurb
You need to write your game concept up as the
blurb on the back cover of an xbox game
You will add your
final renders, the
blurb and cover art
to a template on
Moodle and hand
this in at the
projects end.
10
mins
HOMEWORK
• Write up your blurb before next weeks lesson.
