LIGHTING EVOLUTION
• Understanding Lighting Technologies
1. Light from Burning Fire via Biomass (coal, wood, straw, animal
faeces etc)
2. Light from Heating Filament with Pure Electricity (tungsten-halogen,
incandescent)
3. Light from Heating Filament with Electricity and Gases (metal
halide, sodium vapour, fluorescent tubing.
4. Light from Glowing Diode(synthetic) with electrical current passing
through
5. Light from Future Glowing Diode (organic) with electrical current
passing through
LIGHTING
EVOLUTION
WHAT IS LED?
• A LED or, Light Emitting Diode, is a semi-
conductor light source.
• As electricity passes through the diodes, the
atoms increase in energy.
• As the atoms release their excess energy,
light is created.
ADVANTAGES
OF LED
• High levels of brightness & intensity
• High efficiency
• Long life span – 50,000 hours
• Resistant to shock & vibration
• Low radiated heat – 3.4 BTUs / hour
• No UV rays
3 PART LED
Fixture
Housing- Can be made waterproof by using Gaskets
and Welding. Must be triple waterproof for Explosion Proof.
Fixture must be made spark resistant by complex electrical
engineering (Intrinsically safe).
Driver - Voltage Regulation- LEDs work with very low
voltage- as compared to what’s available in buildings
similar to Ballasts but less complicated.
LED CHIP – DIP, SMD, COB (ALL our Corn bulbs carry
3528, Quattro’s can carry 3528 and 5730, Strip Lighting uses
5050 or 3528)
Exceptions
• Portable and Emergency Lights will not carry a
driver within the fixture but rather outside the
fixture in the charging cord.
• Portable and emergency lighting will also
need to carry a rechargeable battery in it.
• NiCd – Nickel Cadmium – Cheaper, existing
for many years
• Ni-MH- Nickel Metal Hydride – More Expensive
Holds better charge

Specifications Sheets
• Two Reasons Spec Sheets – The Why
1. Placing of Quantity for Budgeting Purposes
2. Placing of Quality of Light for Aesthetic, Legal and Security
Purposes
Both Reasons, you should aim to be informed by asking questions
so you can manipulate your LIGHT RECOMMENDATIONS
according to the particular customer, instead of leaving it up
to them.
• Leaving it up the customer or the Customers Electrical
Consultants or Engineers to overlook the Specification sheets,
would most likely result in the customer going with Fluorescent
Technology.
• Specifications generally used for budgeting purposes and work with
accounts to give cost for initial lumen output with the initial lighting
fixture layout. It will always show that the LED cost per lumen initially
would be higher than fluorescent.
Example:
• XYZ company has an intended budget of $10,000 dollars-
• But the specifications sheets based on Lumen Output Suggest they
should use 4 LED Fixtures costing $10,000 each.
• The Fluorescents based on the same lumen output cost $2400 each
• The LED is 4 times their budget. No way they will go with it.
• Solution -FOCUS ON THE PAIN of the old technology and although it’s
cheaper, why they should at least give one LED fixture a try for
$10,000 and then go ahead and buy some fluorescent to
compliment it. Don't turn focus on the lumen cost.
Specifications Sheets
• In USA if it cost US$400 to run some lights for month in
T&T it will cost $100 to run the same lights.
• Focus on:
1) Heat
2) Instant On
3) Safety
4) Frequency of Changing old system
5) Aesthetics
• Do not focus on initial light output cost per lumen (SPEC SHEET)
or electricity savings. They do save on electricity but in 5-6
Years
Specifications Sheets
Recommending lighting
• The lower the light placed the higher the
intensity of the light- Test this idea if
customer is budgeting.
• Do not need to recommend high wattage
depending on application.
• Take into consideration directional light-
Cannot compare lumens in 400W metal
halide to 150W LED (30K lumens and 150W
15K lumens).
