Development
Projects Running in
Nepal
Scanning
 Projects are the bases of development in a
nation. Nepal has also been operating
numerous projects. It is executing them on
its own or through some other international
donors. Once completed the projects of
national glories that are under
construction, Nepal can have a turn up in
its economy.

completed within certain specifications, defined start
and end date, funding and focus on effective
utilization of limited resources
Types of Projects:
Projects can be classified on a number of bases. A few
of them are: Based on area coverage, projects are of
local, regional provincial, national, and international,
types. Based on funding, they are governmental, non-

Projects of National Glory
 Development is a continuous process. Planned development
is well-organized, goal-oriented and balanced. Development
projects are designed and launched in order to utilize
available resources properly and achieve the desired goals. A
development project is a planned action carried out for
reaching those development goals. Such projects may be of
different levels, scales and priorities.
 In comparison to other, National level projects carry greater
significance since they benefit a larger targeted group of a
country. They require more resources and budget too. These
national level projects are also called projects of national
glory. At present, there are 22 such glorious project in
operation in our country. Soon the government is going to
add some more projects in the lists including the Petroleum
Pipeline Project. Among such projects, we are discussing
only four here in the lesson.

1. President Chure Conservation Programme
 Chure region of Nepal lies in the southern part of Nepal. It is
formed by the deposition of the rivers flowing from mountains
and hills. Chure is the first high land after Terai and the last
hill rage coming down from the Mahabharat Range. This
landscape has played a significant roe in irrigating the
southern plains of Terai and also in reserving the underground
water. Because of its great social and ecological significance,
Government of Nepal has emphasized its conservation since
Fourth Five Year Plan and started Rastrapati Chure
Conservation Programme with NRs 250 million year marked
budget from the fiscal year 2067/068 BS. This programme
started with the aim of keeping balance in lifestyle and
environment regarding organic diversity and geographical,
social and economic aspect. Ministry of Forest and Soil
Conservation is leading and implementing this programme in
27 districts through its departments i.e. Department of Forest
and Department of Soil Conservation and Water shed
Managemnt.

2. Pokhara International Airport
Tribhuwan International airport has long been operating as the only
international airport in Nepal. Due to lack of plenty of international
airports, problems are facing travel and tourism as well as trade and
commerce in the whole country. Taking this in mind, the
government is set to construct other alternative airports to connect
Nepal by air with the external world. Those to be constructed in the
first phase include the airports in Phokara, Bharahawa and Bara.
The construction of an international airport in Pokhara was planned
as per the vision of government to ensure sustainable development
of tourism as this is one of the few most potential tourist
destinations in Nepal. Some preliminary activities such as acquiring
land and fencing the space had long begun about 40 years ago. It
was only in 2011 AD, that Nepal signed a loan-agreement with Exim
Bank of China for the construction of the airport. Accordingly, the
foundation stone was laid down by Prime Minister KP Oli on 1
Baishakh 2073.

2. Pokhara ……..
An Agreement has been made to authorize a Chinese company to
construct he airport. In the meantime, the existing regional airport
that is to be expanded and upgraded as an international airport
renamed Pokhara International Airport. The airport will spread over
an area of 3600 ropanis of land around Chhine danda of Pokhara,
often referred as the second national capital of Nepal. The cost of
the project is estimated to reach over 20 billion 300 million rupees.
Other main structures of the airport will be a 45-m wide concrete
runway over a distance of 2500m. Separate domestic and
international terminals, apron, taxi parking, air traffic control
tower, hangers, cargo terminals, and a 50-m long air bridge. It will
be a standard international airport of ICAO category 4D. The
airport will have facilities for a 200-seated Jet plane to land and
take off. No doubt, Pokhara International airport will be
instrumental in an overall development of state on 4 Pokhara itself
is the provincial capital of the region. The airport will surely help
develop Pokhara as a major tourist destination in the entire world.

2. Pokhara ……..
 The initial works of project started form fiscal year 2074/065 BS
and construction started from fiscal year 2073/074 in Chhine Hill of
Pokhara to make Pokhara a tourist hub (focal point/ center of
activities) This site lies 3 km east to the existing domestic airport
and its estimated budget is supposed to be 7 billion rupees. The
project covers 3600 ropanies of land and will comprise a concrete
pitched runway having 2500 m length and 45 m width. Jet planes
having 200 seats capacity can easily land and take off. The project
also aims to build an advanced air traffic control tower, air bridge
of 5 m length, facilitated taxi parking premise, separate terminal
buildings for domestic and international flights, etc. A Chinese
company is running its work to complete the project on time. Once
completed , the project will also be serving as an alternative
international airport of the Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA)
Kathmandu. The project has been expected to be completed in
fiscal year 2077/078 BS.
 Major Objectives: To increase tourist flow in Pokhara and serve as
an alternative to the TIA Kathmandu.

  • 9. 2. Pokhara International Airport Tribhuwan International airport has long been operating as the only international airport in Nepal. Due to lack of plenty of international airports, problems are facing travel and tourism as well as trade and commerce in the whole country. Taking this in mind, the government is set to construct other alternative airports to connect Nepal by air with the external world. Those to be constructed in the first phase include the airports in Phokara, Bharahawa and Bara. The construction of an international airport in Pokhara was planned as per the vision of government to ensure sustainable development of tourism as this is one of the few most potential tourist destinations in Nepal. Some preliminary activities such as acquiring land and fencing the space had long begun about 40 years ago. It was only in 2011 AD, that Nepal signed a loan-agreement with Exim Bank of China for the construction of the airport. Accordingly, the foundation stone was laid down by Prime Minister KP Oli on 1 Baishakh 2073.
