Lesson 6 editing techniques and sound editing
Lesson 6 editing techniques and sound editing
Learning Outcomes:
• MUST be able to analyse transitions and
sound editing in video examples.
• SHOULD be able to question why transitions
and sound editing has been used in
examples.
• COULD compare transitions and sound
editing techniques using examples.
Providing and withholding information
• Editors can choose whether to include or leave out
information for the audience.
• They do this by putting in shots to show some of the
story content or purposefully leaving them out.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xG5hSOMGn0
• Why would you choose to provide the audience with
information as an editor?
• When might you withhold information in the storyline
and why?
Motivated Editing
Motivated editing is when a cut pushes the action
forwards.
It is used when something off screen alludes that
something is happening and then the cuts reveal
what that is.
Shot reverse shot is a technique used in
conversation that pushes the action forwards.

What would happen if we didn’t use motivated
editing?
Manipulation of time
• In film there are lots of ways that time can be
altered or played with.
• For instance using a montage, flashbacks/
flash forwards, slowing down/ speeding up,
time lapse, jump cuts and in some cases
special effects can all show a difference in
time.

Editing with Sound
• In what ways can sound be used in a film?
Discuss in pairs and Share
Using sound layers
• Films are edited using sound layers,
these layers consist of sound
effects, sound tracks and dialogue.
• All of these sounds build up an
picture of the film in audio.
• What is the effect of using sound
layers?
Soundtracks
• Editing can often be influenced by the soundtrack,
editors often listen to the mood of the audio and
choose their shots carefully to coincide with the
peaks of the music.
• Soundtracks are also useful for providing rhythm
to cut to often on the beat.

Padlet
• Find an example and post to the padlet wall in
the lesson on Moodle.
• Use the title you have been given to find your
example
• double click on the wall to make a post ( you can
use links to videos)
Paste an example on Padlet in your pairs:
• providing and withholding
information
• editing rhythm
• Manipulation of time
• Motivated editing
• Editing with sound layers
• Using a soundtrack
TASK- Come up with a target and write it on a
post it
• Write a personal target that you need to
complete by the end of this session based on
the brief.
• Write a term that you could use in your
assignment at the bottom of the post it.
• Stick your post it on the top right corner of
your screen for me to see as I walk around.
TASK- Complete your blog for submission at the
end of the day, use your target to achieve this.
write about these areas, and any others on your brief
that you haven’t already covered.
• providing and withholding information
• editing rhythm
• Manipulation of time
• Motivated editing
• Editing with sound and a soundtrack
English Target- Use the term on your post it in your blog.
MUST be able to analyse transitions
and sound editing in video examples.
SHOULD be able to question why
transitions and sound editing has
been used in examples.
COULD compare transitions and
sound editing techniques using
examples.
Learning Outcomes:
Refreshing your knowledge
• Write a question on the piece of paper you have been given relating
to the subject
Stick your post it on the learning aim you have
achieved today.
• MUST be able to analyse transitions and
sound editing in video examples.
• SHOULD be able to question why transitions
and sound editing has been used in
examples.
• COULD compare transitions and sound
editing techniques using examples.
